The Ackeburg , also called Ackenburg , is the castle stables of a high medieval hill castle in the Harz Mountains . It is located near Meisdorf in the urban area of Falkenstein / Harz in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt .

The castle was first mentioned in 1216 and has been abandoned or destroyed since 1400. There was also the village of Akkeburg there .

Geographical location

The Burgstall Ackeburg is located in the Lower Harz within the Mansfeld region . It is located between Mägdesprung (northern part of Harzgerode) and Meisdorf (south-western part of Falkenstein / Harz ) on a rocky ridge ( 333.2  m above sea  level ) north of the Selke valley . In the wooded landscape of the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature park, it is located in the Selketal nature reserve about 3.7 km southwest of the village church of Meisdorf.

About 1.2 km to the southwest is the Alter Falkenstein Castle and about 1 km southeast of the Falkenstein Castle (Neuer Falkenstein) - both on the other side of the Selke Valley.

History and layout

The Ackeburg was first mentioned in 1216 AD as the seat of Burgmannen of Count von Falkenstein . Like the village of Akkeburg , which was once at or near the castle , of which nothing is left, it has been abandoned or destroyed since 1400. The owners of the castle were the Lords of Ackeburg .

The castle complex, which consisted of a main and outer bailey with a moat and several ramparts, had a main castle about 30 m in diameter standing on a rocky hill . Above this, in the direction of the highest point on the hill, there was an approximately 11 m wide outer bailey . Nowadays, parts of the neck ditch and cross wall can still be seen at the Burgstall .
