Alte Burg recreation area

This ridge is located in the south and southeast of the city of Aschersleben . It is about a 10-minute walk from the city center. The nature park is about 2.5 km long and 1.5 km wide. In the south, west and northwest, the one meanders around the ridge.

Geologically , this area is a shell limestone ridge , which is 141 meters high at its highest point. As early as the 11th century, a refuge and refuge castle ( Aschersleben Castle ) was built by the Askanians , the remains of which can be found today in Aschersleben Zoo . But the ramparts and entrenchments of the castle can still be seen on the west side directly on the slope to the Einetal.

The area was bare for a long time and was not planted until the middle of the 19th century by the town's beautification association and today has a mixed forest, which is dominated by deciduous trees. The main attraction of the Old Castle is the Aschersleben Zoo , which was laid out in 1973 and was initially referred to as a zoo . About 500 animals have their home on an area of about ten hectares. 120 different animal species are shown in this hilly forest park. The Aschersleben Planetarium , which opened in 1976, and the remains of Aschersleben Castle are located on the grounds of the zoo .

The Westdorfer Warte is located roughly in the middle of the ridge and was part of the city fortifications as a watch tower. It is also called the witch's tower by the city's residents , as there is a witch figure on the tower. During the garrison period in the 19th century, gunpowder was also stored in the tower, so the tower was also known as the powder tower . On the day of the open monument , the tower is opened to the public and can be climbed.

The Luisenblick offers a view of the Einetal . There is a small wooden pavilion there.

The Stephan Park served during the construction of Stephani's Church St. as a quarry. At its southern end there are approx. 200 meters long shooting ranges from the time when Aschersleben housed a hussar regiment within its walls , which regularly moved here for target practice.

Below the old castle in the Einetal is the municipal outdoor pool in an exposed location. Immediately adjacent to the outdoor pool, a gondola pond invites you to row in summer.

Men's width

Men's width

A park-like, seven- hectare square that creates a connection between the train station and the city center is referred to as Herrenbreite . Until 1372 the area was owned by two marshals who had their court there and was known as the "width of the gentlemen Hans and Bosse". The city bought the property and in 1436 a large square was created by leveling it. In the 17th century the place was used by riflemen for shooting purposes. Later a mulberry plantation was created on it. When the local cavalry regiment used the square as a parade ground , it was also called the Field of Mars . In 1722 a riding arena was created here in order to make the space available to the gentlemen from the military and the gentlemen of the city in full width , whereby the name Herrenbreite was reintroduced. The square only got its current size in the 18th century with the successive development on the edge, originally it was much larger. After Aschersleben received a railway connection in 1865, the Herrenbreite to the forecourt of the station was provided with flower beds and other facilities. After the victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, Sedan Day was regularly celebrated on the square . During the GDR era, Herrenbreite was renamed “Platz der Jugend” in 1952. Today's park-like design did not take place until the 1960s, including a music pavilion that was later demolished. Today the park is the “green lung” of the city and is used as an event location twice a year for the guild festival and the park and light festival . A triangular fountain with a water fountain was created in the middle of the square. On the edge of the property towards the city center there is a goldfish pond and a small world clock .

city Park

The park was in 1829 as cemetery laid out the city and remained so until 1866. With the end of the use as a cemetery, the park was left in its original state and now has an old deciduous trees. The cemetery network of paths still exists and old grave slabs can still be found on the wall. In the times of the GDR the park was called Thälmannpark and in 1954 a monument with the bust of Ernst Thälmann was erected, which was removed after the fall of the Wall . Adjacent to the park is a small rosarium , which was created at the end of the 1930s as a supplement and connecting space between the municipal bathing establishment and the employment office. The entire area, together with the Herrenbreite and the Eineterrassen, represents the future centerpiece of the Aschersleben State Garden Show 2010 in Aschersleben. In the middle of the park is a version of the Gottorf giant globe , which is reminiscent of the Aschersleben scholar Adam Olearius .

Promenade ring

The Ascherslebener Promenadenring is a two-kilometer circular route that is only accessible for pedestrians. It runs along the city wall and was built gradually from 1852, when the old city moat began to be filled in. The town's beautification association founded at that time greened the former town moat by planting the promenade with rare trees, some of which are now listed as natural monuments .

graveyards

The municipal cemetery was inaugurated in January 1866 and has a neo-Gothic cemetery chapel as well as a gate system from 1926, which the city architect Heckner designed. It has a size of 16 hectares. There are three cemeteries of honor within the cemetery: a Soviet memorial, a cemetery of honor for those who died in both World Wars, and a cemetery of honor for those who fell and victims of terrorism in World War II, including the victims of the air raids on Aschersleben . In the cemetery are the famous Aschersleber, such as the architect Hans Heckner , the manufacturer Bestehorn with his own mausoleum, the worker functionary Hermann Gieseler or the professor Walter Buhe. Opposite this cemetery is a small Jewish cemetery . It was laid out in 1877 and has around 80 tombstones. The old municipal cemetery in today's city park was used as a cemetery from 1822 to 1866.
