The Sösetalsperre ( Sösestausee ) is a dam in the Lower Saxony part of the Harz near Osterode am Harz , Lower Saxony .

history

The Sösetalsperre was the first dam of the Harzwasserwerke to be built on the Söse from 1928 to 1931 and is used for drinking water supply , flood protection, low water elevation and electricity generation. The construction of the dam cost 14.7 million Reichsmarks at that time. The operators are the Harz waterworks. In 1933 the construction of a long-distance water pipeline began from the Sösetalsperre, the northern branch of which extends to Bremen . Today cities and municipalities in the Hildesheim and Hanover area are more likely to be supplied. The city of Göttingen has also received drinking water from the dam since 1980 .

dam

The dam is an earth dam with a central concrete core and clay seal. The hydropower plant , which is used to cover peak loads, has an output of 1.44 MW and an annual work capacity of 3.10 GWh. The flood relief system (overflow) is placed at the southern transition from the dam to the slope.

Pre-lock

The dam has a pre- dam which has a 350 m long and 18 m high dam and a storage space of 0.75 million m³. Any particles in the inlet should sediment in the pre-lock. There is also an equalization basin below the main dam with a 10 m high dam, which is intended to even out any irregular discharge of water from the dam into the underwater due to dam, power plant and waterworks operation.

leisure

Fishing and hiking are possible. The circular hiking trail is 9 km long. There used to be a restaurant on the main dam, but it has since been demolished. A campsite located at the post-closure was given up around 2006 and has now been largely renatured.

Fish fauna

The Sösetalsperre is a mixed body of water with brown and lake trout , grayling , pike , pikeperch , perch , carp , tench and white fish . Because of its big pike and perch, it is one of the best predatory fish waters in Lower Saxony . Since the reservoir is used for drinking water production, a health certificate is necessary for sport fishing. Only fly fishing is permitted in the post-closure .
