Location structure

Barbis lies at the foot of the southern foothills of the Harz Mountains , is bounded to the north by the Liethberg and has a mountainous town center in the geographical center, while the western part in the direction of Herzberg - Scharzfeld is flat and allows strong sunlight. On the outskirts the Oder flows and once washed out the fields , which are therefore called Oderfeld . The Barbis Bach flows through Barbis itself .
Wide green valley floors with mountain streams stretch behind the Liethberg, and numerous hiking trails are possible from the Andreasbachtal into the Harz Mountains. The mountainous center of Barbis forms the Oderfeld district. It consists of numerous single-family houses with spacious gardens, play streets and turning areas. At the foot of the Oderfeld there is a sports and soccer field, a tennis court, a kindergarten and the former Blödhorn sawmill. The southern side is dominated by a wide field corridor and Barbiser Straße. This district is called Altbarbis. There are more row houses or old half-timbered houses as well as many local courtyards, a few restaurants, the St. Petri Church and a dealer for gardening and agricultural equipment. A few kilometers through the field corridor leads over the "King Hagen Ring" by the Hermann Lons advertised Beberteich and the deserted village Königshagen , today, the same small settlement located from farms in the vicinity thereof, directly to the state of Thuringia adjacent.

The industrial area “In den Bühwiesen” is located in the western foothills in the direction of Herzberg-Scharzfeld. Many small and medium-sized traditional companies have settled here, including a. the Morich laundry, drinks dealer, Ließmann joinery, the Wistoba brush factory. The Bad Lauterberg-Barbis stop on the southern Harz line is also located here . This is the only remaining railway access point in the Bad Lauterberg community. Barbis also has a junction on federal highways 27 and 243 . The industrial and commercial area is located at the foot of the Bühberg, a small, hidden blockhouse settlement at the former Landwehr tower ("Franzosenturm") "Alte Warte", a small hiking destination, and the animal cemetery.

In terms of area, the district of Barbis is larger than the core town of Bad Lauterberg itself.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the working group Barbiser Vereine, which they have been running since August 2016, was designed by the heraldist Uwe Reipert from Beeskow. It is not an official emblem. Buildings

The old waiting tower, also called "Bühberg-Warte" or "Franzosenturm", is a former watchtower on the Bühberg west of Barbis. In the 14th century it was part of the border security between the county of Lutterberg-Scharzfels and the Principality of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen, together with Landwehr trenches . During the Seven Years' War, French troops are said to have shot at Scharzfels Castle with artillery from the French Tower . After years of deterioration, the tower, which is 12 meters high, was restored in 1966–1968 and made accessible as an observation tower . From its covered platform you have a good view of the Harz foreland and Scharzfels Castle. From February 16 to April 15, 2016, the wandering stamp office will be a special stamp of the Harz hiking pin at the Alte Warte and thus a little outside the Harz region.
