Ferdinand's Stone
The Ferdinandsstein , also called Ferdinands Stein , is a granite rock near Ilsenburg in the Harz in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .
Geographical location
The Ferdinandstein is located within the natural park Harz / Saxony-Anhalt in the Harz National Park about 5 km south-southwest of Ilsenburg . It is located on the high elevations between Upper Gebbertsberg (approx. 640 m above sea level ) in the northwest and Wolfsberg (approx. 675 m ) in the east-northeast. About 250 m west of the rock ( 639 m ), a survey point is shown on topographic maps at a height of 638.6 m .
Memorial stone
The Ferdinandsstein is a reminder of the last free-living wolf that was shot in the Harz Mountains. Near the Ferdinand stone in which the lettering Ferdinand's stone is carved, there is a rock with the carved inscription: "Here shot Ferdinand Graf zu Stolberg-Wernigerode on 23th Merz 1798 a wolf" .

The Ferdinandsstein, which lies in the forest, can be reached in this way, for example: from the Waldgasthaus Plessenburg in the northeast on the Schindelstieg , from the Wolfsklippen in the southeast on the Alexanderstieg - passing the White Stones - and later on the Schindelstieg and from the Ilse in the west on the Schlüsie Weg and then on the clapboard .
The rock is included as No. 16 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin. Earlier, the stamping point 16 (was stair staircase / Brücknerweg ) almost 5 km south-east at the fork in the road (about 650 m height; ⊙ ) of stair staircase and Brücknerweg .
