Geographical location

The Königstein is located in the northern Harz foreland in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature reserve . It rises north of Westerhausen (eastern district of Thale ) and north of the district road  2358 (Westerhausen - Börnecke ). The neighboring mountain in the northwest is the 178.1  m high Jätchenberg . To the east the landscape drops over the Börnecker Graben ( Börnigergraben ) coming from Börnecke and the Mühlengraben flowing through Westerhausen to the Zapfenbach . Bundesstraße 6 runs north of both elevations .

Landscape image

The Königstein has the shape of a ridge running in a north-west-south-east direction, which slopes relatively steeply to the north-east, but significantly flatter to the south-west. Most of it is covered with deciduous forest. Wine is grown on the southern slope of the Königstein, it is the northernmost winery in the Saale-Unstrut growing region . The ridge area is dominated by the conspicuous camel rocks, the name of which is derived from their shape: When viewed from the south or north, they are supposed to be reminiscent of two lying camels.

Camel rocks

The camel rocks are made of hardened sandstone, which, however, also has very soft and brittle passages. These rock formations originated as well as the near Teufelsmauer through the origin of the fracture Scholl mountains resin and the resulting ground shifts in the northern Harz region. As with the Devil's Wall, the Königstein is a layered rib from the Lower Cretaceous . As a special geological feature, the Teufelstein was first placed under protection in 1932, and since 1997 it has been registered as a “extensive natural monument ”. On the camel rock there are several climbing routes up to level VIIIb (Saxon scale) .

history

The Königstein was probably used as a place of worship as early as the Stone Age. Germanic solstice celebrations are said to have taken place here. The so-called "sun disks" on the rock - circular shapes cut into the rock with a diameter of approx. 1 m and larger, which are distributed in the lower northern area of the rock - are evidence of historical millstone extraction. There are also several archaeological sites in the immediate vicinity . The last significant discoveries were made during the construction of the B6n , which passes in the immediate vicinity.
