history

The castle in the village was probably built by the Counts of Blankenburg as a hunting lodge and to protect the mining operations that used to be carried out in the area , and is first mentioned in a document in 1329. Southeast of the village is in the Selke early modern Wüstung Selkenfelde .

On January 1, 2010, the municipality of Stiege merged with the municipalities of Sorge , Elend and Tanne and the towns of Elbingerode (Harz) , Hasselfelde and Benneckenstein (Harz) to form the town of Oberharz am Brocken. Memorials

Collective grave in the local cemetery for 27 concentration camp prisoners who were murdered by Nazi functionaries on a death march from the Dora-Mittelbau concentration camp in April 1945 while they were fleeing. On April 9, 1945, three fugitive Soviet prisoners of war were picked up in Stiege and shot by a local auxiliary police officer.
