The Austberg , also called Augsberg or Augstberg , is 292  m above sea level. NHN high elevation in the northern Harz foreland near Benzingerode in the Harz district , Saxony-Anhalt ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Austberg is located directly north of the Harz low mountain range in the northern Harz foreland in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature reserve . It rises directly northwest of the center of the Wernigerode district of Benzingerode . To the north its landscape falls into the actual Harz foreland, to the south the Harz rises. The Holtemme tributary Hellbach flows past to the east, and beyond it is the Struvenberg .

On the Austberg something is west of the summit at about 290  m height, the former watchtower Austbergturm (also Augsbergturm or Augstbergturm called; instead tower also -Wait ; ), now designated observation tower serves.

The Counts of Regenstein had the control room built around 1250. It served as a signal tower for their Landwehr system and the Counts of Blankenburg as a protective tower.

The round tower made of shell limestone quarry stone with gypsum mortar is around 4.4 m in diameter and 1.2 m thick and around 10 m high. A restoration took place between 2006 and 2008/2009.

The Austbergturm is included as No. 83 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin.

Opportunities for viewing and hiking

From the Austbergturm you can see, among other things, Benzingerode, the Harz, the Harz foreland, the Struvenberg and Wernigerode . A 7 km long marked circular path leads around the mountain, which consists largely of shell limestone , through interesting vegetation.
