- Tokyo / Japan : In the general election , the Liberal Democratic Party under the former Prime Minister Shinzō Abe becomes the strongest force with 273 out of 408 seats. The ruling Democratic Party of incumbent Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has suffered heavy losses and only achieved 46 seats. As a result, Abe was re- elected Prime Minister on December 26th .
- Yokohama / Japan : The Brazilian SC Corinthians Paulista from São Paulo wins the Club World Cup in football after beating Chelsea FC from London 1-0 in the final .
- Zurich / Switzerland : Nicola Spirig , Roger Federer and FC Basel are voted athletes of the year .
