Tana River County (until 2010 Tana River District ) is a county in Kenya . The county's capital is Hola . In 2019 Tana River County lived 315,943 people on 35,375.8 km². The district is divided into seven divisions: Garsen, Kipini, Wenje, Galole, Bura, Madogo and Bangale. The eponymous river Tana flows through the county and flows into the Indian Ocean at Ungwana Bay . Tana River County has 55 kilometers of coastline that is suitable for tourism.

Infrastructure

In 2005, the road network in Tana River County was in a poor state. In addition to 534 km of asphalt roads, gravel and dirt roads crossed the county. In addition to six post offices and three financial institutions, there were 57 health care facilities in the county.

economy

In the river delta of the Tana River are rice , bananas , mangoes , cowpea , coconuts , cotton and soybeans grown. In addition to agriculture, the inhabitants raise cattle, mainly cows, sheep and goats. There is also fishing on the coast and the Tana River. More than two thirds of the population lives below the poverty line .

Tana River Primate Reserve

The Tana River Primate Reserve was established in 1976 to protect two species of monkey endemic there , the tana mangabe and the tana colobus monkey . In addition to Grevy's zebras , Maasai giraffes , buffalo and kudu , 200 species of birds live there, including the black beak , martial eagle , bat and the Cape pygmy owl .
