Mandera County (until 2010 Mandera District ) is a county in Kenya . The county borders Somalia and Ethiopia . The capital is Mandera . Mandera County has an arid climate .

The people of Mandera County make a living from nomadic livestock farming, only 5% of the county's area is considered arable. Mainly corn, millet , cow beans , peanuts , bananas and mangos are grown .

In 2005 65% of the population lived below the poverty line , around 52% of men and 82% of women are illiterate . In 1999, 15.7% of the population were unemployed. Child mortality is high in the county, with 12.8% of children dying before their 5th birthday in 2002.

Infrastructure

Mandera County has 47 health care facilities, 3 post offices, 27 telephone booths, and 2 financial services providers. The roads are not paved. Only 11% of the population has access to good drinking water, the average distance to the nearest water source is 20 km. Only one of the large trading centers has electricity, the people's energy needs are covered by wood burning. The county had 60 primary schools and 6 secondary schools in 2002 , including one for girls.

In 2017, the county's GDP per capita was 48,442 Kenya Shillings (approx. 967 international dollars ), making it last among the 47 counties in the country. The income level is thus comparable with the poorest countries in the world.
