West Pokot County (until 2010 West Pokot District ) is a county in Kenya . The capital of the county is Kapenguria . In 2019, the county lived 621,241 people on 8,418.2 km². West Pokot borders Uganda to the west . The people live mainly from agriculture, almost 14% of the land area is arable, forests take 3.8% of the county area. Mainly corn, beans and millet are grown . The Turkwel Dam is in West Pokot County .
education
In 2003 there were 250 primary schools and only 15 secondary schools in West Pokot, some of whose buildings were in very poor condition. In 2006 the number of primary schools had increased to 304 and the number of secondary schools to 26. All primary schools participated in a school lunch program.
Healthcare
Medical care in West Pokot County is poor, with only two hospitals. Kapenguria County Hospital is located in Kapenguria and Ortum is a missionary hospital and nursing school founded in 1956 by the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary of the Diocese of Cork and Ross . The 125-bed house is looked after by the Diocese of Kitale .
structure
The county is divided into councils and divisions. There are three constituencies, Kacheliba, Kapenguria, and Sigor. Under the 2010 constitution , the districts of Pokot Central, Pokot North and West Pokot were merged under the new name of West Pokot County .
