The Turkwel Dam is the largest dam in Kenya .

description

It was built between 1986 and 1993 in what was then the Rift Valley province , now West Pokot County , near the Kenyan-Ugandan border for the use of hydropower . In addition to generating electricity, the dam is also used for irrigation. The dammed river is the Turkwel .

The 35 km long reservoir is 65 or 66 km² and has a capacity of 1.6 billion cubic meters. The impoundment began in 1990 or 1991.

The dam is an arch dam in a narrow gorge. Its height is given in various sources as 150, 153 or 155 m.

Energy generation

The hydropower plant has two Francis turbines with 53.7 MW each, which together deliver an output of 107.4 MW. According to other information it is 106 MW. This covers around 20% of Kenya's energy needs. The power plant was commissioned in 1991 (possibly not until 1993). The owner is the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA).
