Siaya County (until 2010 Siaya District ) is a county in Kenya . The county capital is Siaya . The Siaya County attracted media attention as part of Barack Obama's successful presidential candidacy in the United States . Obama's father, Barack Obama Sr. , is from Nyang'oma Kogelo , a small town in the Karemo Division.

structure

Siaya County is divided into seven divisions: Yala, Wagai, Karemo, Ugunja, Boro, Uranga and Ukwala. There are five constituencies: Ugenya, Alego, Gem, Bondo, and Rarieda. Under the 2010 constitution , the districts of Siaya, Bondo and Rarieda were united under the new name Siaya County .

geography

The county lies at an altitude between 1,140 and 1,400 meters above sea level and is divided into three land formations: the highlands, the lowlands, and the Yala Bog. Two large rivers, the Nzoia and the Yala, flow through the area, both of which flow into Lake Victoria . Lake Kanyaboli is in the county.

economy

Most of the people in Siaya County make a living from agriculture. The main crops are corn , cassava , sweet potatoes , millet , beans , sugar cane , cotton and coffee beans . Livestock farming focuses on zebus , dairy cattle , sheep and goats . The fishing industry is concentrated in Lake Kanyaboli, which mainly offers tilapia , lungfish and furu . Poverty in Siaya County continues to grow, in 1994 41% of the population lived below the poverty line, in 2001 it was 58%. The unemployment rate in 2001 was 1.3%.

Infrastructure

Of the total of 790 km of road network, 90 km are paved, 400 km are gravel, 300 km are unpaved dirt roads. Yala is the only train station in the county. The cities of Sega and Siaya each have a runway for small aircraft. 29 post offices, nine financial institutions, and 95 phone booths were spread across the county in 2002.

education

In 2002 Siaya County had 381 primary schools , 56 secondary schools and one college, the Institute of Technology. In the primary school there were 36 students for one teacher, in the secondary school the ratio was 1:17. On average, 38% of adults in 2002 were illiterate .

Healthcare

In 2002 the county had 37 health care facilities, including 3 hospitals. Siaya County Hospital is the largest in the district with a capacity of 227 beds. The most common diseases include malaria , respiratory and diarrheal diseases.
