The Tata Group under the holding of Tata Sons Ltd ( Hindi टाटा समूह Ṭāṭā samūh ) is an Indian conglomerate founded in 1870 by the Parsen Jamshedji Tata with headquarters in Mumbai . The city of Jamshedpur was named after him in honor of the founder . Tata currently employs 660,000 people, and the companies have branches in 85 countries. A total of 98 companies belong to the Tata Group.
history
The Tata Group was founded by Jamshedji Tata , who took over a bankrupt oil mill in 1869 and turned it into a spinning mill. Two years later he sold the spinning mill for a big profit. In 1874 he founded a cotton mill in Nagpur . This represented the core of the later Tata group.
In 1903 he opened the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai .
After the company's founder died in 1904, his sons Dorabji and Ratan Tata took over the business. Among other things, they founded a steel company - today Tata Steel - and an energy company - today Tata Power.
The conglomerate was further expanded under Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy , who was chairman from 1938 to 1991. Under his aegis, the number of companies under the umbrella of the Tata Group increased from 14 to 90.
From 1991 Ratan Tata took over the presidency. Under his aegis, the group pushed ahead with consistent internationalization. The conglomerate bought international companies or entered new markets with already owned companies.
In 2012, Ratan Tata handed over the chairmanship to Cyrus Pallonji Mistry . This was the second chairman who was not from the Tata family. In October 2016, Mistry was dismissed and Ratan Tata temporarily took over the management of the company again.
