Jamshedpur ( Hindi जमशेदपुर , Jamśedpur ) is a city in the Indian state of Jharkhand with about 630,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is the administrative seat of the Purbi Singhbhum District .

The city is named after Jamshedji Tata . Tata wanted to build a large steel mill together with a town for the workers there. His son Dorabji Tata carried out the project after his death. In 1907 the village of Sakchi was set as the location. The resulting planned city was named Jamshedpur in 1919. This industrially most important place of Jharkhand is also one of the fastest growing cities in the Indian state. Now as the second largest city, Jamshedpur has a well-developed infrastructure, important roads and rail connections, iron and steel works ( Tata Steel ), a locomotive parts and truck production facility Tata Motors (formerly Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company ) and factories for the production of agricultural machinery .

Jamshedpur has been the bishopric of the Jamshedpur diocese since 1962 .

Infrastructure

Jamshedpur is home to the National Metallurgical Laboratory , eight vocational schools connected to Ranchi University and one of the state's three university hospitals. In addition, the company Tata has also contributed to the efficient infrastructure, because it financed the road construction. The drinking water supply, which is also secured by Tata, is even more important for the city. The company provides drinking water in a huge lake. This lake, located in the elephant mountains, the Dimna reservoir , was already used by the British in the 1950s and the following German engineers in the 1960s, including families, as a popular recreational destination, as it was great for swimming and sailing.

The extremely rapid industrial development, especially in the steel sector, led to major environmental damage, such as air pollution or the clearing of trees. The city is only three hours from Kolkata by train . The city is also known as "Tatanagar" thanks to the generous support of the Tata company.
