Christian Zacharias (born April 27, 1950 in Jamshedpur , India ) is a German pianist and conductor.

Life

Zacharias received his first piano lessons at the age of seven. He studied from 1961 to 1969 at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe with the exiled Russian Irene Slavin and from 1970 to 1973 in Paris with Vlado Perlemuter .

In 1969 Zacharias won a 2nd prize at the Concours de Genève , and further awards followed. He was honored at the Van Cliburn Piano Competition in the USA in 1973 and first prize in the Paris Ravel Competition in 1975 .

1975 marked the beginning of the international career. In 1977 Zacharias received the “German Record Prize” for the recording of a Schubert sonata and was named “Young Artist of the Year 1977”. In the 1980s he became known to a wider audience for his interpretations of works of the Viennese Classic, including complete recordings of Mozart and Schubert 's sonatas and Beethoven's piano concertos . In several episodes he also recorded numerous sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti .

His insertion of Janitscharenmusik in a Mozart concerto to its proximity to the opera The Abduction from the Seraglio to emphasize his recording of Preludes without joints from the Well-Tempered Clavier of Bach and the experiment, the same Scarlatti Sonata over again in different stages of his career and to record and publish in various concert halls, identify him as a musician who, beyond pure showmanship, thinks about the meaning and purpose of the interpretation.

Zacharias took on engagements with various renowned domestic and foreign orchestras, a. a. Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , Bamberg Symphony , Dresden Philharmonic and Gothenburg Symphony . From 2000 to 2013 he was director of the Orchester de chambre de Lausanne .

Zacharias took part in several television programs, produced documentaries, etc. a. about Scarlatti and Schumann , and gives numerous master classes . In 2012 he received the Echo Klassik in the category concert recording of the year (incl. 18th century) / piano with his album Mozart: Piano Concerts Volume 7 , with the Orchester de chambre de Lausanne and recorded with MDG.

Zacharias is Officier de l ' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .
