The Indian Institute of Science ( IISc , unofficially also "Tata Institute") is a research institution and university in Bangalore , India .

Course offer

Over 1,500 students are enrolled in courses of study with bachelor and master degrees (B.Sc., M.Tech., M.Mgt. And M.Des.). More than 2,100 students strive for a PhD or "Integrated PhD" (combined Master and PhD degree).

The Institute is divided into 54 academic and administrative departments ( departments , centers ), each one of seven divisions ( Divisions are assigned):

Main building of the IISc

The 1.6 km² main campus is located in the northwest of Bangalore between the districts of Malleswaram and Mathikere. In addition to the faculty facilities and administrative buildings, there are also student dormitories, apartments for employees, sports facilities, restaurants and shops for daily needs.

Since 2008 a second campus with an area of ​​around 6 km² has been built in the city of Challakere.

history

The IISc was founded during British colonial times at the suggestion of the Indian industrialist Jamshedji Tata with advice and support from the English Nobel Prize winner William Ramsay . It started work in 1909, the first Indian director being Nobel Prize winner Sir CV Raman .

Rankings

The IISc has the most publications of any academic institution in India. It has been listed annually as the best and often only university in India since the Shanghai Ranking was first carried out in 2003 until 2017. In the Times Higher Education Ranking , it was the highest-ranked institution in India from 2015 to 2018.
