initial situation
For a detailed description of the events, see: State crisis in Romania 2012
After weeks of protests against his government's austerity policy , which he pledged to the International Monetary Fund in return for a loan of US $ 1 million to overcome Romania's economic crisis , the liberal Prime Minister Emil Boc resigned from his post on February 6, 2012. Opposition leaders Victor Ponta and Crin Antonescu called for immediate elections. Since the three parties PDL , UNPR and UDMR continued to support the government, it remained in office, albeit under the leadership of a non-party technocrat, the former head of the intelligence service, Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu . The opposition Social Liberal Union brought in a successful vote of no confidence in the government on April 27, 2012, whereupon President Traian Băsescu appointed Victor Ponta as the new Prime Minister. In July 2012, a referendum - the second after 2007 - on the impeachment of President Băsescu, decided by parliament, failed due to insufficient voter turnout. The opposition organized for the parliamentary elections in the Social Liberal Union, consisting of the liberal-conservative center-right alliance ( Alianța de Centru Dreapta ) and the Social Democratic Party and also won the support of the UNPR. The liberal-conservative PDL of Boc and Basescu formed the alliance of right-wing Romania ( Alianța România Dreaptă ) with some smaller parties .
