The Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania , also known as the " Union of Hungarians in Romania" (Hungarian. Romániai Magyar Demokrata Szövetség (RMDSz), Romanian. Uniunea Democrată Maghiară din România (UDMR)), founded in 1989, is an ethnic gathering party which, due to the quantitative importance of the Magyars living on the territory of Romania - especially in the former Hungarian Transylvania - continuously manages to move into the two chambers (House of Representatives and Senate) of the Romanian Parliament.

In 2004, with the Hungarian Citizens' Union ( Magyar Polgári Szövetség (MPSz) / Uniunea Civică Maghiară (UCM)), a split was established that advocates more autonomy and stronger ties to Hungary. However, this group remained a long way from entering parliament; However, it is strongly present in the circles of the Szeklerland - Covasna and Harghita .

Former Chairs Géza Domokos and Béla Markó (1989)

For the benefit of its ethnic group, the UDMR usually decides on a strategy of cooperation or coalition with the respective ruling party, including since 2004 in the form of a coalition with PNL , PD and PC (formerly PUR). The technical group of the 18 ethnic minority representatives is also pursuing a similar strategy. At the international level, the UDMR is an associated member of the EPP ( European People's Party ).
