The Partidul Civic Maghiar-Magyar Polgári Párt (PCM-MPP) is a political party in Romania . Its name means, for example, Hungarian Citizens' Party , with the Romanian and Hungarian forms being listed in the official party name. In everyday use and in many publications, the Romanians and Hungarians usually only use their own language with the abbreviations PCM and MPP.

Political orientation

The party wants to represent the Hungarian minority in Romania. It is in competition with the Uniunea Democrată Maghiară din România (UDMR, Hungarian Romániai Magyar Demokrata Szövetség , German- Hungarian Democratic Association in Romania ), which was founded in 1989 . There is no significant difference between the two parties in terms of the political objectives. Both advocate the creation of political autonomy for the Szekler area . The PCMMPP claims to represent the interests of the Romanians living in the Szekler area. She accuses the UDMR of corruption. This in turn fears that the organizational fragmentation will weaken Hungarian interests.

history

The formation was founded in 2001 as Uniunea Civică Maghiară (Hungarian Magyar Polgári Szövetség , German about Hungarian Citizens' Union ). It initially saw itself as a non-party civil movement.

Before the 2004 local elections, she attempted to register as a party. However, some of the necessary signatures of support were declared invalid, for which the Uniunea Civică Maghiară made influential forces in the UDMR responsible. Therefore, their candidates appeared either as independents or on the lists of the Acțiunea Populară party .

On March 14, 2008, the movement was officially registered as a party; in this context, the name was changed to the current name.

In June 2008, the party took part in the Romanian local elections for the first time with its own list. She was able to send some MPs to the parliaments of Harghita and Covasna counties and won a total of eleven mayor posts, including in the cities of Târgu Secuiesc , Gheorgheni and Băile Tuşnad . But it did not succeed in replacing the UDMR as the strongest party of the Hungarian minority in Romania; the PCM reached around 16 percent of the Hungarian electorate.

The party chairman is the former mayor of Odorheiu Secuiesc , Jenő Szász .

Current situation

For the parliamentary election on November 30, 2008 , the PCM planned to enter into an alliance with the UDMR, as otherwise there was a risk that neither party would take the five percent threshold. The talks with the UDMR failed, however, so that the PCM ran for election with its own independent candidates. However, this did not succeed in entering parliament.
