Explosives found at Bonn Central Station in 2012

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After an explosive device was found at Bonn Central Station on December 10, 2012, operations at Bonn Central Station and rail traffic around Bonn came to a standstill for several hours. After the disarming or targeted destruction of the unconventional explosive device and incendiary device, the police investigated the suspicion of an attempted bomb attack ( Section 308 of the  Criminal Code ). The investigation was taken over by the Federal Prosecutor's Office , as it was suspected that the suspects came from the radical Islamic scene .

Find and defuse

Platform hall of Bonn Central Station

At noon on December 10, 2012, a traveler discovered an abandoned travel bag on the main platform ( platform 1) of Bonn Central Station and reported the suspicious piece of luggage to the staff of Deutsche Bahn . The local federal police , which was then alerted , cleared the entire station, cordoned off a large area of the building and the surrounding squares and streets, and had the rail traffic via Bonn's main train station stopped. Explosives experts from the Federal Police opened the bag with targeted fire with a special remote-controlled device , a water gun . It contained metal containers of powder. The Cologne police and the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office then investigated whether this construction was potentially dangerous. There was no personal injury or property damage.

Investigations

The police initiated a major manhunt and in the meantime announced that the travel bag contained the components for an explosive device of an unconventional design that was classified as very dangerous . It was a metal tube filled with ammonium nitrate in the manner of a tube bomb , around which four butane gas cartridges were tied. The associated ignition device consisted of a construction with a battery-operated alarm clock. One day after the explosive device was found, the police took two men from the Bonn Salafist scene into custody based on testimony , but they were released after a short time as not suspect. The explosive device could not be ignited because the detonator was missing, according to other reports.

On December 14, 2012, the Federal Prosecutor took the case and took over the investigation. According to the authority, the reason was reliable evidence that the suspects had connections in radical Islamic circles. There are indications that it is an attempted attack by a terrorist group with radical Islamic characteristics . The Federal Prosecutor's Office commissioned the Federal Criminal Police Office to lead the further investigations.

In October 2013, the federal prosecutor identified one of the perpetrators recorded by a surveillance camera as Marco G., a German who had converted to Islam and who was included in the Bonn Salafist scene. He was already in custody for a planned assassination attempt on Markus Beisicht , the party chairman of Pro NRW . Chemicals and weapons were found in Marco G's apartment during a house search. DNA fragments were secured on the explosive device or on the bag it contained, which could be unequivocally assigned to G's partner and son.

process

In March 2014, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court brought charges against Marco G. and three accomplices of membership in a domestic terrorist organization, attempted murder and attempting to cause an explosive explosion. The indictment also revealed that the actual detonator with initial explosives was not found when a bomb was found. On the other hand, the accused had created a mixture in his kitchen that could have been used as an initial explosive, so the public prosecutor's office assumes that the bomb was complete.

During the trial in November 2015, it became known that sharp objects, a cell phone and prison plans were found in Marco G.'s cell. He was then transferred to another prison and an investigation into his release was initiated.

judgment

Marco G. was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court on April 3, 2017 and the particular gravity of the guilt was determined. As a result, an early release is not possible after 15 years, as is usually the case with life imprisonment, but after 15 years the Penal Enforcement Chamber sets a further minimum serving time before a possible application for release. His accomplices Enea B., Koray D. and Tayfun S. were sentenced to between nine and a half and twelve years in prison.
