From April 1997 to November 1998 he was Deputy Minister for Communications and from November 1998 to January 2001 he held this ministerial office himself. Mahama has been a member of the Pan-African Parliament and chairman of the West African parliamentary group there since 2004 .

On January 7, 2009, he was sworn in as Vice President and on July 24, 2012, after the death of President Atta Mills , he was sworn in as interim president. On December 7, 2012, he achieved an absolute majority in the first round of national presidential elections.
