- Azawad / Mali : French armed forces begin Operation Serval to support Malian units against a jihadist offensive in the south of the country.
- Zhaotong / China : 46 residents of a Yi village are killed in a landslide in the province of Yunnan .

- Buulo Mareer / Somalia : The hostage, two soldiers and 17 of the hostage-takers are killed in the failed liberation of an employee of the French foreign intelligence service DGSE who is held hostage.
- Prague / Czech Republic : In the presidential election received Miloš Zeman and Karel Schwarzenberg the most votes and go into the runoff later this month.

- St. Anton / Austria : With her victory in the Super-G , the Slovenian Tina Maze becomes the sixth female skier to have won World Cup races in all five disciplines .

- Vienna / Austria : Former Federal Minister of the Interior and Member of the European Parliament Ernst Strasser is sentenced to four years imprisonment for taking bribes due to his involvement in the Cash-for-Laws affair .

- Islamabad / Pakistan : The country's Supreme Court orders the arrest of incumbent Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on suspicion of corruption .

- In Aménas / Algeria : Members of the al-Qaida group AQMI take at least 41 foreigners hostage in a gas field attack . The perpetrators call themselves "al-Muwaqiun bi-l Dam" and, according to their own statements, belong to the Katibat al-Mulathamin , one of the oldest jihadist movements in the Sahara.
- Mainz / Germany : The Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament elects the SPD politician Malu Dreyer to succeed Kurt Beck as Prime Minister.

- Johannesburg / South Africa : Host South Africa draws in the opening game of the 29th African Cup of Nations against the selection from Cape Verde .

- Hanover / Germany : The state elections in Lower Saxony brought the party Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen the highest gains. It becomes the third strongest force. Most of the votes, 36%, went to the CDU with Prime Minister David McAllister , followed by the SPD with top candidate Stephan Weil , for whom 32.6% of voters vote. A red-green coalition is to be formed.
- Washington, DC / United States : Barack Obama is sworn in for his second term as President of the United States .
- Vienna / Austria : In the referendum on compulsory military service , almost 60% are in favor of maintaining Austrian compulsory military service and community service. The turnout is unexpectedly high at 50%.
