Jacob Joseph "Jack" Lew (born August 29, 1955 in New York ) is an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). Under US President Bill Clinton (1993 to 2001) he was director of the Office of Management and Budget . During the reign of George W. Bush (2001-2009) he worked as a lawyer , university lecturer and business manager.

Under Barack Obama , Lew was first deputy foreign minister for management and budget planning; from November 18, 2010, he was a member of the Obama cabinet as director of the Office of Management and Budget . He was Chief of Staff of the White House from January 27, 2012 to January 25, 2013 . He was US Treasury Secretary from February 28, 2013 to January 20, 2017 .

Life

Jacob Lew was born in 1955 to Jewish immigrants from Poland in Queens , New York City. His father's family, Irving Lew, had migrated to the USA from Poland a few years earlier, while his mother's family, Ruth (née Turoff), had migrated to the USA after the end of the First World War . Irving Lew worked as a lawyer and antiquarian , Ruth (Turoff) Lew as an office manager in a law firm .

Jacob Lew attended public schools and graduated from Forest Hills High School (FHHS) in Queens , New York in 1972 . He studied at Carleton College in Northfield , Minnesota , and then moved on to Harvard University , where he in 1978 Bachelor received -degree (BA).

From 1973 to 1979 he was a legislative assistant in the US Congress . From 1979 to 1987 he was domestic policy advisor to Tip O'Neill , the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives . At the same time, he completed postgraduate studies in law at Georgetown University (Law Center), graduating in 1983 with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree . After qualifying as a lawyer in the state of Massachusetts , he was from 1988 to 1993 partner of the law firm Van Ness Feldman & Curtis . In 1993 he joined the government and became President Clinton's special assistant for the Corporation for National and Community Service ( AmeriCorps ) on the staff of the White House . He then became Deputy Director of the Office for Management and Budget and finally, on May 21, 1998, Director of this federal agency himself. Jacob Lew was a member of the enlarged Clinton cabinet until the end of its presidency on January 20, 2001.

After retiring from government service, he accepted a position as Professor of Public Administration at New York University in 2001 and was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of New York University from 2001 to 2006 . He was also a board member of the Corporation for National and Community Service from 2004 to 2008 . Between 2006 and 2009 he was also employees of Citigroup initially as COO for Global Asset Management ( Global Wealth Management ), and then from 2008 to 2009 as COO for Alternative Investments ( Alternative Investment ). He was also a board member of the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Think Tank Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the Council on Foreign Relations .

After the election of Obama as US president Lew was in January 2009 alongside James Steinberg Deputy Secretary ( Deputy Secretary of State was) and as such responsible for management and budget planning in the State Department . On July 13, 2010, he was nominated as Director of the Office of Management and Budget after the incumbent Orszag announced his resignation on July 30, 2010. Lew was confirmed by the US Senate on November 18, 2010 . During the vacancy after Orszag's resignation, Jeffrey Zients was acting as head of the agency.

After the resignation of William M. Daley as Chief of Staff of the White House, Lew succeeded him on January 27, 2012.

On January 10, 2013, President Obama nominated Lew for the post of Treasury Secretary . On February 28, 2013, the Senate confirmed his nomination. With this, his signature appeared ex officio on newly printed dollar bills. After Lew's "many curls" signature was criticized, Obama jokingly promised to work towards Lew changing his signature so that at least one letter of his name could be recognized. Lew actually changed his signature.

Private

Lew is married, has two children and is a member of an Orthodox Jewish community .
