John Sullivan

John Joseph Sullivan (born November 20, 1959 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American diplomat . He was Deputy Secretary of State of the United States in the administration of US President Donald Trump from May 24, 2017 to December 20, 2019 . After Rex Tillerson's dismissal on March 13, 2018, he took over the management of the State Department from March 13, 2018 to April 26, 2018 . On April 26, 2018 was Tillersons successor, the former CIA boss Mike Pompeo , elected as the new US secretary of state.

In 2019, Trump nominated him as the United States Ambassador to Russia ; Sullivan admitted at his hearing before the Senate committee that he knew about the campaign against the US ambassador to Ukraine . On January 16, 2020, Sullivan succeeded Jon Huntsman as Ambassador.
