Robert S. Ingersoll

Robert Stephen Ingersoll (born January 28, 1914 in Galesburg , Knox County , Illinois , † August 22, 2010 in Evanston , Illinois) was an American politician and diplomat .

Life

Ingersoll graduated from Yale University in 1937 . He then embarked on a professional career as a businessman; Among other things, he was Chairman and CEO of the BorgWarner Corporation in Chicago and Director of the First National Bank of Chicago .

Ingersoll entered the diplomatic service under Richard Nixon's presidency . From 1972 to 1973 he served as United States Ambassador in Japan , after he worked until 1974 as Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs ( Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs ) in the US State Department . In 1974 he finally became Deputy Foreign Minister , which he remained under President Gerald Ford .

After he resigned from this office in 1976, Ingersoll joined the Board of Trustees at the University of Chicago , of which he was a member until 1981. He then returned to business and became, among other things, Chairman of the Panasonic Foundation and Vice President of the US Chamber of Commerce . In 1988 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
