The Jewish Museum of Australia in Melbourne was founded in 1982 by Rabbi Lubofski. He came to Australia in 1957 and headed the St. Kilda Jewish Congregation until 1988. His aim was to set up an institution to develop new ways of preserving and caring for the Jewish cultural heritage. In 1995 the museum moved from the Melbourne Synagogue to a building near the Beth Israel Temple in St Kilda . The Jewish Museum of Australia has achieved national recognition for its extensive educational program and has hosted numerous exhibitions over the years.

Since 2008, the Jewish Museum of Australia has been the site of the Austrian Memorial Service .
