This article gives an overview of the German Football League 2 season 2004 . The 2004 season was the 23rd season of the 2nd Bundesliga / GFL 2.

League division

In the northern group there were a total of four climbers, due to the non-licensing of the Cologne Crocodiles , the Weyhe Vikings moved up to the GFL 2 North and the Hannover Musketeers 2003, second in the GFL 2 North, moved up to the GFL North. The Hamburg Wild Huskies were renamed Hamburg Eagles before the season started. After the Mainz Golden Eagles withdrew , only seven teams played in GFL 2 Süd . The Simbach Wildcats moved to Kirchdorf and named themselves accordingly Kirchdorf Wildcats.

Season course

Regular season

In the northern group, three teams fought for the relegation place to the GFL , including, in addition to the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes and the Lübeck Cougars , surprisingly also the promoted Cologne Falcons . The Falcons and the Hurricanes got off to the best start and met unbeaten for the first blow in Cologne in the middle of the season . The Kiel had won seven games by then, the Falcons followed with six wins. And an open exchange of blows developed in which the Kielers were still ahead with 21:20 until the end of the third quarter and marked 28:27 three minutes before the end of the game. But Falcons QB David Drane led his team to the end zone of the Hurricanes. A 10-meter pass to WR Simon Eisebitt, one minute before the end of the game, sealed the 33:28 for the Falcons. Meanwhile, the Lübeck Cougars stalked the leading duo with a winning streak. The Hanseatic city lost against the Falcons and the Hurricanes at the beginning of the season, but then remained undefeated until a few game days before the end. The Falcons had to tremble a bit about their clean slate on the ninth matchday, a close 8: 6 at the Hamburg Eagles , only secured after the Eagles could not use the two-point conversion to compensate. One game day later, the Eagles made life difficult for the Cougars, but had to bend at 13:18. And again a week later there was a decisive game. The Lübeck Cougars had to compete in Kiel. The Hurricanes had won the first leg with 31:19, and the Cougars had to catch up. In front of 1,400 spectators in the Holstein Stadium , the people of Lübeck did everything and led at 28:15 at half time. But after half-time, Kiel came into play better, but without really catching up. So it was 48:31 for the Cougars in the fourth quarter, which would have been enough for them to win the direct comparison , but a 37-meter TD pass from QB Tommy Guy to WR Lindner to 48:38 turned the tide in favor of the Hurricanes. The biggest beneficiaries of the result, however, were the Cologne Falcons, who for their part only scored a 23:23 against the Langenfeld Longhorns and surrendered their first point, but were now three points ahead of two instead of two. The Falcons could not take this lead and were already established as champions before the last game, against Kiel, which was not changed by the first defeat of the season, 21:10 in Kiel.

In the southern group, a three-way battle for the relegation place to the GFL ensued. In addition to last year's champion and runner-up, the Kirchdorf Wildcats ( last year still based in Simbach) and Darmstadt Diamonds , the Munich Cowboys also played for the title. Two years after voluntarily moving to the third division and the subsequent promotion back to division two, the cowboys knocked on the door to GFL-Süd again. Although they had to accept a 26: 7 defeat against the Hanau Hornets on the fifth match day , just a week later they in turn gave the Kirchdorfern 42: 0 the disadvantage. In the middle of the season, the league was split into two. The Cowboys were ahead with two minus points, followed by Diamonds and Wildcats, each with three minus counters on their accounts. With six minus points each, the Wiesbaden Phantoms , Hanau Hornets and Allgäu Comets were already somewhat behind and the Franken Timberwolves were at the bottom of the list at this point and were still without any points. The scheduling of individual games then resulted in a somewhat crooked table, as some teams had two fewer games than others. The Wildcats initially fell back to fourth place after they had to acknowledge a home defeat against the Wiesbaden Phantoms. A small preliminary decision was made on the ninth game day when the Cowboys just got the upper hand in front of 1,500 spectators in Darmstadt with 13: 8 and thus placed 3 points between themselves and the pursuers. Although they had to admit defeat to the Wildcats on the penultimate matchday 14:17, a sure 49:14 win in the final round in Wiesbaden brought the Munich Cowboys into the promotion relegation. At the end of the table, little changed in the second half of the season, Wiesbaden settled in fourth place and the Hornets had nothing to do with relegation either. On the penultimate game day, the Allgäu Comets secured their place in the league. In doing so, they benefited from the simultaneous defeat of the Franks in Darmstadt with their own defeat against Kirchdorf.

Relegation for promotion to the GFL

In the south there were no relegation games because in the GFL South 2004 only five teams competed. The Munich Cowboys rose as winners of GFL 2 Süd.

In the north, the Cologne Falcons had to deal with the Hanover Musketeers . Already in the first game in Hanover, the GFL 2 Nord winners from Cologne made it clear that they wanted to be in the top division. The Falcons won 48:21 in front of 700 spectators in the Rudolf Kalweit Stadium . The second leg was also safe prey for the hawks. The promotion was sealed with a 44-0 success, while the Hanoverians, after only one year in the first division, had to make their way back to the second division.

Relegation to promotion to the GFL 2

In addition to the two direct climbers Weinheim Longhorns and Königsbrunn Ants , the regional league winners Deggendorf Black Hawks and Stuttgart Silver Arrows fought for third place in the southern group. Deggendorf was able to win his home game and present a 39-0. But the Stuttgart were not intimidated by this and almost managed the turnaround in the second leg. In the end it was 34-0 for the Silver Arrows in Stuttgart, which was just not enough. Thus, the Deggendorfer stood out as the third climber.

In the north it was also close. The master of the RL West, the Troisdorf Jets faced the master of the RL Ost, the Berlin Rebels . In Troisdorf the teams parted with a very close 6: 7. In the second leg in Berlin, however, the Berliners set the pace and won 23-0. The champions of the RL Nordost, the Osnabrück Tigers, played for the second promotion place against the second from the west, the Bochum Cadets. The Cadets were able to land a 20:14 victory in Osnabrück, but the Tigers did not give up and fought for a 13:13 draw in Bochum, which was enough for the Cadets to rise.
