This article gives an overview of the German Football League 2 season 2006 . The 2006 season was the 25th season of the 2nd Bundesliga / GFL 2.
League division
After the withdrawal of the Hanover Musketeers, only seven teams were played in the northern group .

Season course
Regular season
In the north, the league became a clear matter for the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes, who only showed a nakedness on the last day of the game when the Hamburg Eagles had to be defeated in a game without any influence on the table. The Eagles always stayed with the Hurricanes, but their weak start to the season with only 3: 3 points brought them significantly behind. Behind these two top teams there was a broad midfield, only the bottom of the table, the Assindia Cardinals, lost a bit. After a mixed start with 3: 7 points, the last seven games were lost and you had to leave GFL 2 after only one year.
In the south, the duel at the top of the table was even more exciting and had to be decided in direct comparison . The Weinheim Longhorns were able to present on the second match day and beat the Wiesbaden Phantoms with 28:14. After both teams had surprisingly scored points against Kirchdorf, the middle of the season saw the showdown in Wiesbaden. Until the fourth quarter, with an intermediate result of 23:12, everything was still possible for the Phantoms, but a fumbler return touchdown produced the 23:18 final score and so the Wiesbaden team had to rely on other teams to help out. This did not happen and the Longhorns became champions. Until the middle of the season, the Kirchdorf Wildcats and the newcomer from Plattling and the Franken Knights were able to keep up with the two top teams, but various point losses let the contact break. At the bottom of the table, the Jena Hanfrieds were stuck right from the start, finishing the round without winning a point. The second relegation place was played on the last game day between the Königsbrunn Ants and the Hanau Hornets. The Ants had to win at home, the Hornets a draw was enough. After an 8: 3 half-time lead for the Hornets, the Ants turned the score to 16: 8 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Hornets equalized, but the Ants took the lead with another touchdown 22:16, the conversion failed, so a final touchdown with extra point to victory 23:22 was enough for the Hornets, who were able to celebrate relegation.
Relegation for promotion to the GFL
In the relegation, the Weinheim Longhorns met the traditional team of the Bavarian capital, the Munich Cowboys , the last southern team that could win the German Bowl . And the Kiel team also met a former German Bowl winner, as in the previous year, the Hurricanes had to deal with the Düsseldorf Panthers .
And like a hurricane, the Kielers then moved through Düsseldorf, with a 30-0 away win they set the course for promotion and did not let the butter be taken from their bread in the home game. The Panthers were able to win 30:27 in Kiel, but they couldn't make up for the thirty point deficit.
And in the south, too, there were signs of a change in the first leg in Munich. The Longhorns were able to land a safe 20: 0 win and go into the second leg calmly. And in their home game, too, the Weinheimers didn't let anything burn and also won at home, this time with 27:14.
Relegation to promotion to the GFL 2
In the relegation in the north, the champions of the Regionalliga Ost, the Frankfurt Red Cocks , and the champions of the west, the Bonn Gamecocks faced each other. In front of 1,200 spectators, the Gamecocks were able to take a safe 35:13 poster from the home game to the Oder . And the Gamecocks won there too, with 28:24. The Bochum Cadets , second Regionalliga West and the Weyhe Vikings , champions of the Regionalliga Nord , fought for the second promotion place . The Cadets narrowly won the first leg in Bochum with 28:27. And also in Weyhe it was 14:13 at halftime in favor of the western representative. But then the Vikings turned up again and turned the game, to the final score of 34:14, which meant the second promotion to the second highest German division, after 2000, for the Vikings.
In the south, the Kaiserslautern Pikes champions of the northern group of the Regionalliga Mitte met the Franconian Timberwolves , second in the Regionalliga Süd. After a 14:40 defeat in the first leg, the Pikes had to win their home game by at least 26 points. This seemed to work, the Pikes were 28-0 up in the middle of the fourth quarter, but a late touchdown by the Timberwolves, about 30 seconds before the end of the game, sealed the defeat of the Pikes and the rise of the Timberwolves. In the other duel, the champions of the Regionalliga Süd, the Aschaffenburg Stallions, met the Stuttgart Silver Arrows , champions of the Season South of the Regionalliga Mitte. The Stallions left nothing to be desired in both encounters and won 36: 6 at home and 49: 7 in Stuttgart.
