In the northern group only five teams were played. The reason for this was the renunciation of the relegated from the GFL, the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes , and the withdrawal of the Magdeburg Virgin Guards from the 2nd Bundesliga, both teams competed in the Regionalliga in 2003. Furthermore, the Wolfsburg Blue Wings withdrew their team shortly before the start of the season. Seven teams competed in the south, here the GFL relegated, the Munich Cowboys , waived their right to start and voluntarily returned to the regional league.
In the decimated northern group, the Düsseldorf Panthers, Hanover Musketeers and the Lübeck Cougars played for the title. The Hamburg Wild Huskies and the Langenfeld Longhorns played in no man's land, as there were no relegation ranks. In the end it turned out that the Panthers had already won the championship in the first games. Thanks to the victories against the Musketeers and the Cougars, the traditional team from Altbierstadt was able to break away with two points after just three match days and they never gave up this lead. The Musketeers came in second ahead of the Cougars. The Hamburger and Langenfelder landed behind in fourth and fifth place.
In the south, a duel for the championship title quickly emerged. The climber from Simbach was at the top of the table right from the start and only the Darmstadt Diamonds were able to keep up. On the ninth matchday it came to the top game in Simbach. The Wildcats determined the first half and went into the dressing room with a 34:14 half-time lead. But the third quarter was dominated by the Diamonds, with three touchdowns in a quarter the Lilienstadt team even took the lead 35:34, but the Wildcats came back again in the fourth quarter and won the exciting game 47:43. This gave the Wildcats a three point lead, as the Diamonds had to share the points with the Hanau Hornets on matchday three, which should be important in the final bill. Since the Simbach Wildcats were no longer naked, the second leg, at the same time the last game of the season, in Darmstadt was already meaningless. The Diamonds were able to win 31:20, but the lost point against the Hornets was decisive for the Wildcats' title. The Allgäu Comets from Kempten (Allgäu) , the Mainz Golden Eagles and the Hanau Hornets landed in the middle . Against the relegation, the Franks Timberwolves and the Fürsty Razorbacks played, here the Franks could get one more victory than the Razorbacks, which they had to relegate.
Relegation for promotion to the GFL
In front of four hundred spectators, the Düsseldorf Panthers won the Assindia Cardinals with 38:28. And also in the second leg, in front of more than 1000 spectators, the traditional team from the Altbier metropolis won, this time with 35: 0. With this, Panthers celebrated their return to the top German league after voluntarily withdrawing from the GFL after the 2001 season.
In the south, the Marburg Mercenaries kept the Simbach Wildcats at a distance in their home game. After an interim 21-0 lead by Marburg, the Simbach team came up again to 21:14, but 22 points in the last quarter ensured a clear 50:21 success. In the second leg, the Simbachers were able to win 21: 7, but this was not enough to beat the Mercenaries in a direct comparison . This left the Marburg first class and the Simbach second class.
Relegation to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga
Due to the thin team cover of the 2nd Bundesliga North, the champions of the Northeast and West regional leagues, the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes and the Bielefeld Bulldogs , were promoted directly. In addition, there was a third promotion place that was played between the respective table runners-up. Here the Cologne Falcons prevailed against the Weyhe Vikings with 49: 7.
In the south, the teams of the Regionalliga Mitte, which played in two groups of four teams each, initially qualified for the relegation games against the RL-Süd teams. The respective group winners, the Wiesbaden Phantoms and the Danube Hammers , prevailed against the runners-up, Weinheim Longhorns and Badener Greifs . The Phantoms won against the Greifs by 48:13. The Hammers prevailed against the Longhorns with 33:14.
In the relegation, the Phantoms then met the second in the Regionalliga Süd, the Straubing Spiders . This game was rated 20-0 for the Phantoms. In the other game, the Danube Hammers met the champions of the Regionalliga Süd, the Munich Cowboys . The old masters from the Bavarian capital prevailed 42-0 in this duel and rose together with the Phantoms.
