The 2008 season of the German Football League 2 was the 27th season of the GFL 2, the second highest division of American football in Germany.

The Assindia Cardinals , who were able to prevail in the relegation against the Cologne Falcons and thus rose to the GFL , became champions in the North Season . The Troisdorf Jets were relegated to bottom of the table in the regional league, while the sporty relegated Stuttgart Silver Arrows remained in GFL 2.

In the season south, the Plattling Black Hawks secured the championship. They too were able to prevail in the relegation against the Darmstadt Diamonds and were promoted to the GFL for the first time. The Königsbrunn Ants were relegated to the Regionalliga, and the Bonn Gamecocks stayed in GFL 2 despite the relegation.

Season course

Regular season

There was a three-class society in the south. The teams from Plattling , Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Franconia) and Wiesbaden played the title among themselves. The teams formed the second class, with the exception of the Königsbrunn Ants. With a newly formed team, the Ants were not competitive, they only managed one touchdown during the entire season, but they played all games and did not fall apart despite some heavy defeats. The title fight was exciting until almost the last day of the game, but due to the lost direct comparisons, the Knights and the Phantoms had to hope for a slip of the Plattling Black Hawks. They hoped in vain that Plattling showed no nakedness and won the title. The Franken Knights were able to push past the Wiesbaden Phantoms on the last day of the match and finished second, the Phantoms had to be content with third place. Fourth was the climber from Montabaur , ahead of the GFL relegated from Saarland, the Saarland Hurricanes. The second newcomer, the Stuttgart Silver Arrows, could not keep the class, in some games only narrowly beaten, it was only enough to penultimate place behind the Kirchdorf Wildcats.

In the north, the newcomers from the regional league, the Assindia Cardinals, surprisingly also prevailed in GFL 2 and secured the title in an exciting finish ahead of the Hamburg Eagles, last year's champions. The Langenfeld Longhorns and also the Düsseldorf Panther, who started the round with 15: 3 points, but then lost four of their last five games, also fought for the title for a long time. The climber from Bonn and the Troisdorf Jets landed on the relegation ranks.

Relegation for promotion to the GFL

In the relegation of the GFL Nord, the Assindia Cardinals challenged the Cologne Falcons . In the south, the Plattling Black Hawks met the Darmstadt Diamonds .

Surprisingly, the Cardinals from Essen were able to annoy the favored Falcons in the first leg in Cologne and win with 24:17. That was not to be expected, as the Cardinals had only been promoted from the regional league to GFL 2 the year before . In addition, the Cologne Falcons didn't look too bad when they played in the GFL and were able to make many games tight even if they were lost. And also in the south, the second division was able to prevail in the first game. The Black Hawks from Plattling won the offense exchange with 43:33.

The second leg took place on September 20. In the south, Plattling prevailed again in a highscoring game. With 44:36 the Darmstadt Diamonds had to admit defeat and start again on the way to the second division. For the Plattling Black Hawks, on the other hand, the rise to the top class is the greatest success in more than twenty years of club history. And the underdog also prevailed in the north. With 28:23 the Cardinals were able to win their home game and thus advanced to the GFL.

Relegation to promotion to the GFL 2

To gain promotion to GFL 2 Nord, the champions of the Regionalliga West, the Paderborn Dolphins , met the champions of the Regionalliga Nord, the Hildesheim Invaders . The games both had a close result, but the Invaders prevailed in each case. First they won 7-0 in Paderborn, at home they prevailed 13:10. The second place of the RL West, the Bochum Cadets , and the master of the RL East should have played. However, since the Bochumers canceled the games, the master of RL Ost rose.

In the relegation for promotion to the GFL 2 Süd, the master of the RL Middle, the Kaiserslautern Pikes , should meet the second of the RL South, the Starnberg Argonauts . But the representative from Bavaria waived, so the pikes rose. For the second free place, the champions of the RL Süd, the Aschaffenburg Stallions , and the second of the RL Mitte, the Rhein-Neckar Bandits from Mannheim, faced each other. The bandits had the upper hand in both games and rose as well.
