Bürgerpark Nord
The Citizens Park North is a 100 ha large park on the northern edge of downtown Darmstadt . The park was built between 1974 and 1999. The Bürgerpark is divided into three different areas: The northern part consists of a landscape park with hills, lakes, woods , forest areas and meadows. There is a sports zone in the middle and a school center in the south.
history
The once completely flat area was characterized by allotment gardening, large fallow areas and the remains of clay pits from former brickworks until the early 1970s . Today there is a viewing hill in Bürgerpark Nord, the so-called "Watzebuckel". The man-made hill has a height of about 22 meters.
Natural monument
The “Kastanienallee” natural monument is located on the northeast edge of the Bürgerpark. To the east of Kastanienallee there is the natural monument "Alte Roßkastanien".
Others
The site was once intended as an extension of the Technical University of Darmstadt . Because of the difficult soil conditions and the high groundwater level , the university buildings were not built.
