The Troisdorf Jets (formerly Bonner Jets ) are an association for American football , flag football and cheerleading from Troisdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia . In the 2019 season, the 1st team will play in GFL2 North , the second highest division in Germany.

history

Founded in 1980, the team initially played in Bonn. Under the name of Bonner Jets they achieved the championship title in the then 2. Bundesliga , but initially renounced promotion for financial reasons. From 1984 to 1990 the team then played in what was then the 1st Bundesliga , today's GFL, and reached the quarter-finals in 1985 and 1986 and the second round in 1988. A change in the narrow team structure meant that after moving to the neighboring Troisdorf in 1990, the team competed in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Troisdorf Jets were very successful here: in the 1990s, the team finished five times in a row and won the NRW Cup four times.

After a temporary relegation to the regional league, the Troisdorf Jets returned to the GFL2 after the 2005 season and took a respectable third place in the table in the 2006 season. After a sixth place in the 2007 season, the 2008 season was not a good star for the Jets. With only one win of the season they had to be satisfied with the last place in the GFL2 North and were relegated again.

The team has been playing in GFL2 again since the 2011 season. The Presidium of the American Football Association Germany (AFVD) had unanimously decided that the Troisdorf Jets could move up to the German Football League 2. Although the Jets narrowly failed in the promotion round, they are benefiting from a league reform "on the green table", with which the second highest German football league was increased to eight teams in the north and in the south.

In the 2012 season, the jets skidded just past a small sensation. With good chances for the championship title, the Troisdorf footballers had to be satisfied with third place. In the following year 2013, the team achieved the best placement in the club's recent history with the runner-up title in the GFL2.

In the 2014 season, the Jets got out of the GFL2 again. After head coach Javav Lenhardt left his team in the middle of the season for the United States , there was only one point missing to stay in the league. For the first time this year, the Jets Prospects was also a second men's team. Stephan "Butch" Pohl took over the head coach position in the founding year.

After relegation, the Jets competed again in the Regionalliga NRW in 2015. Eric Grützenbach, who had actually given up his position two years earlier after a 20-year career, took over the post of head coach. The upheavals in the team and the new coaching team let the Troisdorf footballers end up in fourth place in the table after a weak season.

With Andreas Heinen as the new head coach and offensive coordinator, the jets started in 2016 and ended up being runner-up behind the strong Langenfeld Longhorns , who consequently also rose to the GFL2.

In 2017, after a furious league start at the end of the regional league season, the Jets had to be content with third place in the table. The record of five wins out of five defeats was rather sobering, as the goal was clearly to get promoted to GFL2. Things went much better for the JuniorJets (U19), who made it into the German Football League Juniors (GFLJ) for the first time in the club's history under head coach Lorenz Kunkel .

In 2018, the Jets finally won the championship in the Regionalliga West and rose again to the GFL2.

General

The aim of the Troisdorf Jets association is to promote American football, cheerleading and flag football. Not least thanks to the extensive youth sponsorship, the Jets see themselves as a big family and live this idea in their daily club work.

At Troisdorf Jets, men and women as well as boys and girls of almost all age groups have the opportunity to play American football, one of the most diverse sports in the world. With their own cheerleading department, the "Dynamix", the Jets also offer another exciting sport that is closely linked to football.

While the 1st men’s team (Jets Seniors) certainly focuses on performance, the main task of the 2nd team (Jets Prospects) is the development of young players and football beginners. In addition, Troisdorf Jets attach great importance to the development and promotion of players in the youth sector. Thanks to the intensive work of dedicated trainers, the Jets have more than doubled their membership among children and young people in recent years.
