The Langenfeld Longhorns are a German American football club from Langenfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia . Since the 2017 season, the Longhorns have been playing in GFL 2 Nord, the second highest division in Germany.

history

The Longhorns were founded in 1990. After only friendly games were played in 1991 , the team went into regular league operations in 1992 under head coach Karl-Heinz Hallen. After a few seasons in the fourth and fifth league, the Longhorns rose in 1996 to the Regionalliga (3rd division), but the following year again from the Oberliga. But they managed to get up again immediately and after two years in the regional league they were promoted to GFL 2 Nord in 2000 with second place . There you could establish yourself well, in the 2007 season the Longhorns took second place in the table. In the 2008 season , the team could play for the title for a long time, but in the end had to be content with third place. The 2009 season closed the Longhorns under head coach Sherman "DJ" Anderson in fourth place in the table.

In 2009, under head coach Mario Corosidis, a second senior team, "Seniors 2", was founded and started regular gaming operations from the 2010 season.

In 2011, the license for GFL 2 had to be returned due to bankruptcy proceedings . The second team was then the only remaining senior team, so that the Langenfeld Longhorns now had to start again in the sixth division. The only title of the 2011 season was won by Bambini Flags in the D-Jugend Nordrhein-Westfalen. This was the first title win after the team had previously had to pass the Düsseldorf Panther and the Duisburg Dockers or the Duisburg Thunderbirds in front of them. This success was repeated in 2012. In 2013, the Longhorns again succeeded in being promoted to the Regionalliga West, which they belonged to with increasing success until the 2016 season. The Longhorns finished first in the 2016 Regional League season and were promoted to GFL 2 again.

In the 2017 season, the Longhorns surprised and finished fourth in the table, tied with the Rostock Griffins , who had also been promoted, but who had the better touchdown ratio. In the 2018 season, the team finished fifth in the middle of the table with six wins and eight defeats. In the 2019 season, the Longhorns finished fourth again with 8 wins and 6 defeats and, for the first time since their promotion, had a positive point and TD point balance. Outstanding player of the season was US loanee Jarvis McClam with 24 TD passes and 23 touchdowns by rushing.
