The handsome steppe candle ( Eremurus spectabilis ) is a type of plant from the genus steppe candles ( Eremurus ) in the subfamily of the Affodill family (Asphodeloideae).
features
The handsome steppe candle is a perennial , herbaceous plant that forms a rhizome and reaches heights of 75 to 200 centimeters. The leaves are gray-green, 25 to 50 millimeters wide and only rough or hairy on the edge. The inflorescence stem is glabrous. The inflorescence is dense, cylindrical and 30 to 60 centimeters long. The perigone is broadly bell-shaped, after the flowering period strongly curled and persistent. The tepals are pale yellow, often green or reddish with a wide white border and 12 to 14, sometimes up to 16 millimeters long. The capsule fruits have transverse ribs, are 6 to 9 millimeters in diameter and are pressed against the shaft.
The flowering time is in June and July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 or 28.
Occurrence
The distribution area includes the Crimea , Turkey , Syria , Palestine , northern Iraq , northern Iran , Afghanistan , Pamir-Alai and western Tianschan . Here the handsome steppe candle occurs in semi-desert bushes and on thorn upholstered corridors.
Systematics
From Eremurus spectabilis three subspecies have been described:
- Eremurus spectabilis subsp. spectabilis : The tepals are pale yellow or pale greenish yellow. The leaves are bare, the leaf margin is rough or ciliate. The fruit veins are rounded. This subspecies occurs in the Crimea, central Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, northern Iraq, northern Iran and the Caucasus at altitudes of 1000 to 2750 meters.
- Eremurus spectabilis subsp. Regelii (Vved.) Wendelbo (Syn .: Eremurus Regelii Vved. ): The tepals are reddish, the edge is broadly white. The fruits are very edgy and annoying. This subspecies occurs in Afghanistan, Tienschan and Pamir-Alai at altitudes of 700 to 3200 meters.
- Eremurus spectabilis subsp. subalbiflorus (Vved.) Wendelbo : The leaves are hairy. The flower color and the fruits are like Eremurus spectabilis subsp. spectabilis . This subspecies occurs in northern Iran and Turkmenia at altitudes of 750 to 2000 meters.
In Asia Minor there are other, closely related, small species.

The handsome steppe candle is rarely used as an ornamental plant. It has been in culture since 1800 at the latest.
