origin

Friedrich August Marschall von Bieberstein was a family member of the old Meissen noble family Marschall von Bieberstein . His parents were the Württemberg colonel and later Oettingen-Wallerstein court marshal Conrad Otto Christoph Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein (1726–1796) and his wife Johanna Theresia Henriette nee. von Wolf (1738–1783).

Life

Like his two brothers Ernst Franz Ludwig and Karl Wilhelm , Friedrich August Marschall von Bieberstein was a graduate of the Hohen Karlsschule in Stuttgart. Already in his youth he was interested in science. His scientific career began in 1792 when he began his service in the Russian military in the Crimea. Marshal von Bieberstein lived in Russia and later became the Imperial Russian State Councilor, director of silk construction and curator of the Flora Taurico-Caucasica.

He carried out several research trips in the Caucasus and published a geographical description of the countries in the Caucasus (see picture). It contains information about topography, history, economy, population and the flora and fauna. Some of the plants that live there were discovered by him or described for the first time and still bear his name today. He is also said to have contributed to the creation and further development of the park in the summer palace of the Russian tsar in Crimea.

After his death, his plant collection of around 10,000 species was acquired by the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg; it is currently owned by the Komarov Botanical Institute.
