Life

Born as the son of the scientist and educator Professor Dr. Franz Xaver Stoll and his wife Katharina grew up in Bensheim and graduated from the old grammar school. His love for the fine arts made him study architecture and applied arts. After graduating, he became a teacher and later director of the trade and painting school in Bensheim.

In addition to his job, he held the office of chairman of the Bensheimer Gewerbeverein from 1928 to 1933, with which he introduced the Bensheimer advertising week in the twenties. As the first chairman of the spa and tourist association, he played a key role in founding the wine festival on October 19, 1929. On May 14, 1930 he founded the "Association for the Preservation and Care of the Bensheim Dialect" from which the "Oald Bensem" homeland association emerged.

As a writer he wrote poetry and theater pieces in dialect, worked as a local researcher and wrote around 15 works on the history of his hometown Bensheim. His greatest work is likely to be his “Bensheimer Idiotikon”, with which he compiled a comprehensive work on the Bensheim dialect.

As first chairman of the Bensheim tourist office and later in the voluntary service of the city (1933 to 1940), he made a special contribution to the beautification of the cityscape. The creation of the city park at the Rodensteiner Hof is due to him. He gave the impetus for the design of the former mayor van Gries facility, the so-called "Aalag" in Bensheim, south of the train station on Rodensteinstrasse, for the creation of the small green area at the town mill with the monument of " Fraa vun Bensem " and the wine fountain at the hospital; The design of the square at the vigilante fountain at the trading post and the lookout point on the Vetzersberg with a bench and table, donated by the “Bensheimer vigilante”, can also be traced back to him.

His membership of the NSDAP, which he joined in 1933, should be viewed critically. In the local branch of the NSDAP he filled the position of head of propaganda. In the same year he was appointed honorary second alderman of the city of Bensheim. There he took over the office for construction, transport, education and culture until 1940. In 1940 he fell out with the incumbent mayor and had to resign from his position as alderman. Several speeches and newspaper articles from this time, mainly from 1933, bear witness to his initial conviction of National Socialism. Due to his party activity and the associated public appearances and speeches, Joseph Stoll is still controversial despite his merits.
