The Franken Knights (founded as Rothenburg Knights ) are an American football team from Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Franconia in the state of Bavaria . The Knights have been playing in the Oberliga Bayern ("Bayernliga") since the 2018 season.

history

The Knights were founded in the autumn of 1983 as Rothenburg Knights. In their first season in 1984 they competed in the second Bundesliga South. In their second season they were promoted to the first Bundesliga, where they played two seasons. Then they were relegated and spent a few years in the second division before being promoted again in 1992. In the 1993 season , they made it to the quarter-finals of the play-offs . The 1994 season was not so successful and they were defeated in the relegation against the Stuttgart Scorpions . Relegated to the second division in terms of sport, the Knights, who renamed themselves Franken Knights in the 1995 season and moved to Würzburg , were able to keep the class through the subsequent expansion of the first division. With a newly formed team, relegation was not possible and you had to compete in the second division again in 1996.

After the 1996 season they moved back to Rothenburg and continued to play in the second division until 1999. There you could win the title in 1999 and beat the Hanau Hornets in the promotion relegation . As a result, the Franken Knights were first class again from the 2000 season. In the five seasons up to 2004 they reached the quarterfinals of the German Bowl four times. The most successful was the 2003 season , which finished in second place in the GFL-Süd and was allowed to play the quarter-finals at home.

After the 2004 season, the club voluntarily withdrew from the GFL for economic reasons and started again in the GFL 2-Süd in 2005. In 2011 he was promoted to the GFL.

Martin Habelt took over the post of head coach at the Franken Knights from 2012. Randall Watkins is head coach from the 2014 season. In the 2015 season Erwin Rieger was the head coach of the Franken Knights. At the end of the season there was relegation to the GFL2, which the Knights entered without playing the relegation against Frankfurt Universe . In 2016, the Knights were relegated to the regional league under the direction of Jason Olive. The 2017 season with Jörg Seybold as head coach also ended with relegation, so that the Knights relegated for three years in a row.

The Franken Knights have been playing in the Oberliga Bayern since 2018.
