Season course

Regular season

In the north, the dominant teams in recent years set the tone again and set themselves apart from the rest of the field. The first were the Cologne Crocodiles, who only had to admit defeat to the Berlin Eagles once. The Adler ended up in second place, one point behind. In addition to a defeat against Cologne, they also had to give up a draw against the defending champion and third in the table, the Düsseldorf Panther. The Panthers then already had a comfortable five-point lead over fourth place, the promoted Hamburg Silver Eagles, who led the midfield and picked up the last remaining play-off spot. Beyond the play-off places, the zone of the teams with negative points accounts, who also all played against relegation, began. It remained exciting until the last matchday. Although the Dortmund Giants were not competitive and remained without points in the season, the Berlin Rebels, the promoted team from Solingen and the Monheim Sharks did not want to easily follow the Giants into the second division. On the last day of the match there was a showdown in Monheim, where the Sharks had to make up for the defeat in Berlin (6:21) in order to send one of the other two teams into the second division. But the Berlin Rebels won 34: 8, which meant relegation for the Sharks.

In the south, as in the previous year, the Munich Cowboys dominated the league. With only one point sharing (17:17 against the Kempten Comets), the cowboys from the regular season went into the play-offs. Behind it, the midfield expanded almost to the bottom of the table. Significantly for this and absolutely curiously, all other play-off participants achieved a negative touchdown ratio, while the two behind them had a slightly positive touchdown difference. On the last day of the match, the Regensburg Royals had it in their hands to reach the play-offs. In the game against the direct competitors from Hanau, the Royals were still leading with 20:15 two minutes before the end and had possession of the ball themselves. Her coach decided on the fourth down just before his own end zone, but only to go centimeters, against a punt, but the play was not successful, Hanau came into possession of the ball in a very promising position and minted it to the 21:20 victory, which was the cause second place in the table and a play-off home game meant while the Royals fell from the play-off ranks. The Rothenburg Knights came third ahead of the Noris Rams. The long-time Bundesliga club Badener Greifs and Bad Homburg Falken had to relegate. The last-named team had to complain about the loss of 15 regular players before the start of the season due to financial problems and was only able to secure the required minimum of 45 players at the last moment.

Play-offs

In the first round of the play-offs there were clear results. The Munich Cowboys won against the Hamburg Silver Eagles with 60: 0. The Cologne Crocodiles, who sent the Noris Rams home with 66:18, won just as clearly. The Berlin Adler also won their home game with 58:26 against the Rothenburg Knights. Only the Hanau Hawks could not use their home advantage and were defeated by the defending champions, the Düsseldorf Panthers, with 13:48. The Cologne Crocodiles received the Panthers in the semifinals and the Berlin Eagles had to travel to Munich to see the Cowboys. As in the regular season, the Panthers couldn't find any means to survive against the Crocodiles, in the end it was 34: 8 for Cologne. The defending champion was eliminated. In the Bavarian capital, on the other hand, there was a duel at eye level, in the end the Cowboys won just under 19:17 and moved into the German Bowl for the second time in a row. For the Adler, who won the German Bowl four times between 1987 and 1991, the semi-finals were the final destination, as in the previous year.

German Bowl

The German Bowl XV took place on September 25, 1993 in the Olympic Riding Stadium in Munich in front of 9,000 spectators. This is where the dominant teams of their respective groups met. The Munich Cowboys, last year's runner-up, faced the Cologne Crocodiles, runner-up in 1990 and 1991. Neither team had ever won the German Bowl.

First the crocodiles took over the reins. Two times RB Markus Finke and once QB Michael Davis reached the Cowboys end zone and secured the Cologne team a 20: 7 half-time lead. Then the Munich struck back, two run touchdowns by Ingo Seibert put the Cowboys in the fourth quarter 21:20. But the men around QB Davis did not give up and scored another touchdown and a field goal to make it 29:21. But the Munich Cowboys evened out this lead again, QB Phil Hickey, who delivered an almost perfect game, passed around a minute before the end of the game, initially over 25 meters to WR Stefan Munker for the touchdown and then converted the necessary conversion through a pass to Jens Gerhard.

So it was 29:29 after the regular playing time and for the first time in the history of the German Bowl the winner had to be determined in extra time. Here the Munich WR Thomas Zeitler became a hero, he caught two touchdown passes in overtime from Phil Hickey, which ultimately meant the final score of 42:36 for the Munich Cowboys.
