German Football League 1979 gives an overview of the 1979 season of the American Football Bundesliga , which was the first season of the 1st Bundesliga / GFL (from 1999 German Football League).

League division

It was played in a group of six teams, the league was held under the umbrella of the AFBD . The first two of the group played a championship final. A few years later this final was called German Bowl I.

Regular season

In the first ever American football season in Germany, the Frankfurt Lions prevailed undefeated. Second came the Ansbach Grizzlies , who only had to admit defeat to the Frankfurters in the season games. The other places ended up with the Berlin Bears , who later renamed themselves the Berlin Adler, the Bremerhaven Seahawks , Munich Cowboys and the Düsseldorf Panthers , who opened the season on August 4, 1979 against the Lions.

German Bowl

The German Bowl I took place on November 10, 1979 in Frankfurt . In front of 300 spectators, the Frankfurt Lions won against the Ansbach Grizzlies 14: 8 and thus became the first German champions in American football.
