The American Football Bund Deutschland ( AFBD ) was an umbrella organization for American football in Germany between the late 1970s and the early 1980s .

history

The AFBD was founded on March 3, 1979 as the first official association for American football in Europe in order to give this increasingly popular sport an official umbrella organization. The AFBD was founded by the American football clubs Frankfurter Löwen , Düsseldorf Panther , Munich Cowboys , Ansbach Grizzlies , Bremerhaven Seahawks and Berlin Bären, now known as the Berlin Adler .

However, some of these clubs formed the Northwest German Football League in 1980 and 1981 . The AFBD announced its dissolution on October 16, 1982 due to internal differences and a lack of liquidity. As a successor association , the American Football Association Germany (AFVD) was founded on the same date .

President

The AFBD had three presidents during its existence. These were in chronological order:

  • Alexander Sperber , elected in 1979
  • Paolo Wölker, elected in 1981
  • Jürgen Grahmke, elected in 1982

Competitions

championship

During its existence, the AFBD organized the top division in Germany and its finals for the German championship in 1979, 1980 and 1981, which will later be named German Bowl I, German Bowl II and German Bowl III. At that time they were named AFBD Championship .

Cup

In 1980 the association also organized the only state cup competition in Germany, the AFBD Cup . The Ansbach Grizzlies won this 28:24 against the Hanau Hawks .
