The Bremerhaven Seahawks are a German American football team from Bremerhaven that currently plays in the third German football league, the Regionalliga Nord. A Seahawk represents an osprey or bird called an osprey . The team's logo represents the head of an osprey against a blue background, based on the first logo of the Seattle Seahawks from the NFL.
history
Founded in December 1978 by soldiers of MFG 3 in Nordholz as Bremerhaven Panthers, the name was changed a little later due to the fact that the name was identical to the people of Düsseldorf in Seahawks . The Bremerhaven Seahawks were founded in February 1979, making them the second oldest football club in Germany that still exists. The founding duo Thyrone Williams and Ulrich Kramer took over the chairmanship of the association. As early as 1979, when the Seahawks were founded, they took part in the league. The first season ended with fourth place.
1980 - Northwest German Football League
In 1980 the Seahawks played in the Northwest German Football League , which started as a competitive league for the 1st Bundesliga after association quarrels in the AFBD . Due to many American players, the Seahawks managed a smooth walk through in the 1980 season. They were unbeaten first, but lost in the final, in the Grugastadion in Essen in front of 12,000 spectators, to the Düsseldorf Panthers with 6:15. The game ended in a mass brawl, however, as some Seahawks players felt cheated by the organizers. Since both Bremerhaven and Düsseldorf claimed the title for themselves, this final was never officially rated.
1981-1985
From the 1981 season the Seahawks started again in the 1. Bundesliga of the AFBD and reached the quarter-finals of the German Bowl in 1982, where they lost to the Hanau Hawks with 12:51. In 1983 they withdrew from the Bundesliga due to the new foreigner rule.
1986-1992
In 1986 the Seahawks rose again to the Bundesliga , where they only stayed one season. In 1987 the Seahawks became champions of the 2nd Bundesliga North without losing points. The return to the first division did not succeed, however, they were subject to the Ratingen Raiders in relegation .
In 1987 the football club Bremerhaven Seahawks joined the OSC Bremerhaven. Since then, all games can be played in the North Sea Stadium. Until 1991 you could hold the second highest German league, in 1992 you had to withdraw from the game.
Rebuilding and Oberliga 1993-2017
1993 committed the Seahawks a rebuilding in the Association League North. In 1996 a new start followed in the development league, followed by a few promotions and from 2003 to 2006 they played again in the regional league (3rd league). In 2007 they entered the association league (5th division) and made it to the league as champions, where they took third place in 2008. The Seahawks stayed in the big leagues until 2017.
2018 – today
Since the 2018 season, the Bremerhaven Seahawks have been back in the Regionalliga Nord after being promoted.
