history

In 1926, a sports field was built on the former marshalling yard of the Zollinlandbahnhof and later converted into a stadium as a Zollinlandplatz , on which the Gymnastics and Sports Club Bremerhaven 93 played its home games. This area was to be used for urban development in the 1970s; a new stadium had to be built.

In the Lehe district west of the Gaußschule between the Eckernfelde settlement and the Cherbourger Straße / Bremerhaven-Überseehäfen motorway feeder, an area of 8.25 hectares was made available. From the end of March 1974 to September 1975 the stadium was built and 24 million marks invested. For the stadium stand and the building 410 had  concrete piles having a length of up to 15 meters in the silty march bottom rammed be.

The oval stadium with its grass pitch and an eight-lane synthetic running track offered 15,000 spectators. On the other outside areas, two large and several smaller playing fields were created on natural grass , artificial turf and redgrand surface . The sports park also includes a large sports hall with a gym, a covered 50-meter sports pool with lifting floor , a teaching pool, a sauna and various special rooms as well as the North Sea Stadium OSC restaurant . Since 2010, the large hall has had an extendable grandstand that can seat up to 300 people.

The stadium was given to the major club OSC Bremerhaven for sole use. The club was created in 1972 from a merger of several Bremerhaven clubs. The size of the stadium was geared towards the game operations of the soccer team, which still played in the third highest at the time, the Amateur Oberliga Nord , and twice rose to the 2nd Bundesliga . After relegation from the Bremen league in 2018/19, OSC Bremerhaven is in the sixth class Bremen regional league . The city has been running the sports park since 1987 and the swimming pool is available for public use as Bad 3 .

In the first main round in the 2005/06 DFB Cup , FC Schalke 04 had to travel to FC Bremerhaven . The cup game attracted 9,897 spectators to the North Sea Stadium, who saw a 0-3 defeat for Bremerhaven. The game of the Leher Turnerschaft against 1. FC Köln (0: 5) in the first main round of the DFB Cup 2017/18 took place in the sold-out North Sea Stadium.

In addition to the regular football games, the stadium was the venue for various major national and international events.
