The Ansbach Grizzlies are an American football club from Ansbach in the state of Bavaria in Germany . The Ansbach Grizzlies are co-founders of the Football-Bundesliga, today's GFL , and three-time German champions .

history

The Ansbach Grizzlies were founded in 1979. The US soldiers stationed at the Ansbach-Katterbach airfield helped out.

Together with the Frankfurter Löwen , Düsseldorf Panthern , Munich Cowboys , Bremerhaven Seahawks and the Berlin Adlers , the Grizzlies contested the first Bundesliga season .

In the first final, today's German Bowl I , the Grizzlies were runner-up on November 10, 1979 with an 8:14 against the Frankfurt Lions.

After another defeat (12:21) against the Lions in the 1980 final, they became German champions for the first time in 1981 with a 27: 6 win against Frankfurt .

Another championship title followed in 1982 with a 12: 6 against the Cologne Crocodiles . In 1983 and 1984, the Ansbach Grizzlies were both runner-up against the Düsseldorf Panthers and German champions again in 1985 (14: 7). In 1986 the Ansbach Grizzlies took part in the final for the eighth and last time and were defeated by the Panthers at 14:27 in German Bowl VIII .

In 1987 and 1988 the Grizzlies reached the semi-finals, in 1989 only the quarter-finals of the Bundesliga. After a fifth place in 1990, the heyday of the Ansbach Grizzlies ended , especially since the US armed forces have now been reduced.

After two relegations in a row, the team played in the third, temporarily in the fourth division, until after the 1998 season the withdrawal from official game operations took place.

After rebuilding and participating in the Aufbauliga in 2000, the Ansbach Grizzlies have been participating in regular game operations again since 2001. Initially started in the regional league Bayern West, the team played until the end of the 2006 season in the Bavarian League, which is the 4th league in Germany. For 2007, the men's team was not reported to play and instead a senior flag football team was formed temporarily . In the 2008 season the team played in the Aufbauliga Bayern A. However, due to a lack of players, the team had to be withdrawn from the current game soon after the start of the season.

In 2014 the Grizzlies were able to rebuild themselves and started in the Aufbauliga Nordbayern against the Kulmbach Brewers and Schweinfurt Gladiators . All four games could be won to zero ( Perfect Season ).

In 2015, the Northern Bavarian regional league met again against the Kulmbach Brewers and the Bamberg Bears , Aschaffenburg Stallions , Hof Jokers and the Black Pirates from Murach. Both games against Hof were lost 6: 8 and 13:20 respectively. The remaining eight games were won and the season ended in second place behind Hof.
