The German Football League 2014 was the 36th season of the German Football League (GFL), the top division of American football in Germany.
The regular season began on April 26, 2014 and ended on September 14, 2014. This was followed by the play-offs, which ended on October 11, 2014 with the final of the German Bowl XXXVI . In this, the New York Lions prevailed 47: 9 against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns and won their ninth championship.
mode
A total of 15 teams compete in two separate groups (seven in the GFL North and eight in the GFL South). Each of these groups holds a round-robin tournament in which two teams meet twice, with each team enjoying home rights once. After each game, the winning team receives two points and the defeated team receives zero. In the event of a tie, each team receives one point. The opponent's points are counted as minus points. At the end of the round-robin tournament, a ranking list is determined, in which the number of points achieved is decisive. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decides.
After the round-robin tournaments, the best four teams compete in a play-off round for the German championship. The last team of the southern season is fighting in a relegation to stay in the league.
The play-offs for the championship are played crosswise. That means, the first in the group plays against the fourth in the other group in a quarter-finals. Accordingly, the second in the group plays against the third in the other group. The group first and second enjoy home rights. The winning teams compete against each other in the semi-finals in such a way that the winner from group A or fourth from group B meets the second from group B or the third from group A. The team that is better placed in the round-robin tournament enjoys home rights. The two winners of the semi-finals compete against each other in the German Bowl XXXVI .
In the relegation, the bottom of the group of GFL South plays against the champions of GFL 2 South in a return match, with each team enjoying one home right. The winner of these two games qualifies for the GFL, the loser competes in the GFL 2 South in the following season. Since only 7 teams played in the GFL Nord this season, there was no relegation.

- New Yorker Lions (Champion of the GFL Nord 2013 and winner of the German Bowl XXXV )
Although the Hamburg Blue Devils had athletically qualified for the 1st Bundesliga, the club withdrew the license application for participation in the 2014 GFL season in January 2014. After a decision by the AFVD, there was no replacement procedure for the Northern Group. Thus only seven teams played in the north group.
The following teams had qualified for the group south:

- Marburg Mercenaries
- Munich cowboys
- Rhein-Neckar Bandits
- Saarland Hurricanes
- Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (Champion of the GFL South 2013)
- Stuttgart Scorpions
The last of the group south of the 2013 season, the Wiesbaden Phantoms , could not prevail in the relegation against the first of the GFL 2 south, the Allgäu Comets . With this, these two clubs exchanged their class affiliation.

Since there were only seven teams in the GFL Nord, there was no relegation in the north in 2014. As champions of the GFL 2 Nord , the Hamburg Huskies qualified directly for the GFL.
