Season course

Regular season

In the south, the Weinheim Longhorns made it into the play-offs in their first GFL year . The teams from Darmstadt and Saarbrücken could safely be left behind and they achieved close game results against Kiel and Marburg. But of course you had to pay hardship in one game or another. The Marburg Mercenaries, last year's runner-up and defending champions of the group south could not keep their place in the sun, they were close and fought head-to-head with the Scorpions from Stuttgart. And they had to win in their last away game of the season against the Hamburg Blue Devils to stay ahead of the Marburg team, but they made it. At 17:10 the Blue Devils from the Hanseatic city could be defeated. With this, the Scorpions conquered the crown in the southern group for the second time after 1998. The Red Lantern went to the Saarland Hurricanes, which lost the direct comparison against the Darmstadt Diamonds.

The northern group was marked by the march through the Braunschweig Lions, only the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes achieved partial success at 15:15 at home in the Holstein Stadium . This draw helped the Kielers to achieve third place, on which they slipped one point ahead of the Blue Devils from Hamburg, who could not win their last game against Stuttgart. Second place went to the Berlin Adler, one point ahead of the Kiel team. Dresden found itself in the table cellar very quickly, only in the ninth game could the first and only points be scored. The Elbestädter had to be relegated, while the Cologne Falcons landed in the no man's land of the table with a lot of room for improvement.

Interconference Games

The interconference meetings saw the northern team as the winner eight times, and the southern team four times. However, this clear distribution is a little misleading. Sometimes the games were very close. The Cologne Falcons already needed a two point conversion to beat the Darmstadt Diamonds with 22:21. The Weinheim Longhorns led against Kiel in the fourth quarter with 13:10, but were still intercepted by the Baltic Hurricanes with 16:13. And the Braunschweig Lions also had to fight in their home game against the Marburg Mercenaries until the last play to keep the upper hand with a field goal from kicker Steffen Dögler with 25:23.

Promotion relegation

In the relegation, the Dresden Monarchs faced the Hamburg Eagles , while the Saarland Hurricanes from Saarbrücken faced the traditional Munich Cowboys team .

In the north, Dresden managed to keep the Eagles at a distance in both games, even if it was very close in each case. The monarchs traveled to Hamburg with a 28:24 home win in their backs. There they fell 7-0 behind in the first few minutes and thus temporarily moved into the second division . But the Dresdeners were not unsettled by this and played a 19:13 lead by half time, which lasted until the end of the game.

In the south, however, the shares of the game were distributed quite differently. The Saarbrücken, only slipped into relegation because of the lost comparison, nicely distributed guest gifts in the form of fines and other individual mistakes to the Munich guests. They gladly accepted and drove a safe 25: 7 away win. The second leg in Munich was then a clear affair. The guests were swept out of the Dante Stadium with a score of 48: 2 in front of 1,400 spectators .

Play-offs

In the quarter-finals, the respective home teams prevailed. Braunschweig marched and clearly showed the Weinheim Longhorns their limits with 55:26. In Berlin, the Eagles allowed the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns only one field goal in a 23: 3 home win. The other two games were more interesting. They beat the Stuttgart Scorpions, after the two interconference games, the Hamburg Blue Devils for the third time in the season, this time the result was 27:17. And the Marburg Mercenaries got the upper hand against the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes with 21:16.

In an exciting semi-final, the guests from Marburg were able to put the first points on the scoreboard, but in the course of the game Braunschweig repeatedly increased its score up to a 26:12 lead in the fourth quarter. Marburg was able to shorten it to 21:26, but nothing more. With this, the Braunschweig Lions moved into the German Bowl for the eleventh time in a row, in front of 5200 spectators in their home stadium on Hamburger Straße . The second semi-final turned into a defensive battle in which the Stuttgart Scorpions, with almost 1,500 spectators, got the upper hand over the Berlin Eagles at 19:14. This was the first time the Scorpions made it into the final in the fourteenth Bundesliga year. The move was decided by a dramatic final two minutes. Stuttgart led 1:45 minutes before the end with 13: 7 and tried to make everything clear with a field goal, but the kick failed and was carried back to the touchdown for the Adler. After a successful extra point, it was suddenly 14:13 for the capital city. But Stuttgart struck back again, with a 64 yard TD pass from QB Ira Vandever to WR Tim Schäuflein, they left the field as the winner with 19:14.

German Bowl

In the German Bowl XXIX , the Stuttgart Scorpions and the Braunschweig Lions faced each other. The Scorpions had a real home game, because the bowl was played in the local GAZI stadium . But this was of no use in front of 8,152 spectators. The Lions won safely 27-6. They continuously increased the lead to 24: 0 after three quarters, before the Stuttgart QB Ira Vandever made the honor touchdown in the fourth quarter. Lions kicker Steffen Dölger made the final score with a 44 yard field goal. With this, a total of sixth, German Bowl victory, the Lions drew level with the Düsseldorf Panthers , who were the sole record winners so far. It was also the second Braunschweig title hat trick, after 1997-1999.
