The Dortmund Giants are among the first American football clubs in Germany. You currently play in the Oberliga NRW.

history

The Dortmund Giants were founded on May 22nd, 1980 in the "VIP" restaurant in Unna .

The Dortmund Giants registered to play in the American Football Association Germany (AFBD), which competes with the American Football Association Germany (AFVD) . In the 1981 season this meant membership in the first division, but when the two associations merged to form the AFVD at the turn of the year, his member preferred Herne Tigers for the first division, banishing the "giants" to the second division. It would be three years before the Giants were back in 1985 on the bel étage of German football.

The eighth (1986 and 1990), quarter (1987 and 1988) and the semi-final participation in the play-offs for the German championship are still among the greatest sporting successes today. During this time, seven “giants” made the leap into the national team with Gerland, Saatkamp, Tiedemann, Friedrich, Hauck, Gerald Olceweski and Dirk Kapella.

The Giants didn't go downhill again until the early 1990s. In 1991 came the two-pronged first division, where they could hold out until the 1993 season, then relegated to third division, which even the then World League star Olaf Hampel, who had since been appointed coach, could not prevent. With US coach Mel Crandall in 1996, things turned around for the better. The “giants” said goodbye from the regional to the second Bundesliga with a “perfect season”. In the following year, Dortmund established themselves in this league and then came in third in 1998.

Another year in the league was followed by the so-called "B1 era", the cooperation of the Giants with the Bochum Cadets , who together formed a second division team. But the high expectations could not be implemented, "B1" only came in third, which ended the cooperation between the district neighbors again. There followed a restart in the association league. There, however, another “perfect season” was achieved under player-coach Tobias Gerland .

History of the cheerleaders

The Dortmund Giants cheerleading team was formed in 1991 under the direction of Danja Bannura. A year later, Petra Gronau took over the training and the name "Silverettes" was born. Since then, the Dortmund Giants cheerleaders have not only been seen at games, but also at championships. The Silverettes fought for the NRW runner-up title in 1993, 1994 and 1995 and qualified for participation in the German championships.

In 1997 Petra Gronau left the team and left her tasks to Kristine Peier and Danja Bannura. To restructure the team, a championship break was taken in 1997. Since January 1999 the coaching duo has been called Kristine Peier and Anna Scheibner. The team received a valuable addition in December 2001 with Elke Otto, who used to be an active member of the Silverettes. With another coach change, Saskia Brauer and Tatjana Munk took over the team management. Most recently, the team was trained by Jessica Buse and Mona Völkel.

In order to do justice to the strong growth of the cheerleading department, which had grown to five teams and operated under the name "Silver Company", the company went into self-employment. This is how the independent cheerleading club United Cheer Sports was founded in Dortmund in July 2010 .

In 2012 the Dortmund Giants founded a new cheerleading department, the "Giants-Cheerleader Dortmund" under the direction of Tania Idowu.

Departments

The Dortmund Giants club currently has four football departments (U13, U16, U19, 1st team tackle football) and a cheerleading team.
