The Hanau Hornets are the American football department of the American Sports Club Hanau eV from Hanau . They are the sporting successors of the Bundesliga club Hanau Hawks, which was dissolved in 1999 .

history

The Hanau Hornets (German: Hanauer Hornets) were founded in 1999 as the sporting successor to the traditional team and Bundesliga club Hanau Hawks, which disbanded in the same year. As the successor to the Hawks, the team played in 1999 in the 1st Bundesliga, today's GFL , but then relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga .

After constant defeats in the 2nd Bundesliga in 2000, the team was rebuilt and a voluntary start in 2001 in the Oberliga, in which the Hornets became undefeated champions and were promoted to the regional league. In the regional league, the team was again undefeated champions in 2002 and rose to the 2nd Bundesliga South for the 2003 season . The Hornets played there until the 2007 season , plagued by bad luck with injuries, they could only book one win in the season and were relegated to the regional league. Again badly shaken by injuries, the relegation in 2008 could only be ensured in the last home game by a narrow 7: 6 win over the Mainz Golden Eagles . At the end of the 2009 season, the Hornets prevailed in the relegation for the GFL 2 7-0 (in Kempten) and 10: 8 against the Allgäu Comets and were thus second class again in 2010. In the GFL 2, the Hornets 2010 could not exist, it was relegated to the Regionalliga Mitte. And 2011 was not the year of the Hanau footballers either, they said goodbye to this division after 8 defeats. In the 2014 season, the Hornets play in the fourth-class league "Hessen / Rhineland-Palatinate / Saar", from which they are relegated with 2 wins and 8 losses. In 2015, the team began to rebuild under head coach Michael Myers in the Landesliga Mitte. After a positive 2015 season, the Hornets succeeded in 2016, with nine wins and one defeat, to rise again to the Oberliga Mitte. In the 2020 season, the hornets will play against the ravens, Hanau's city rivals, for the first time.

In addition to the men's team, the Hornets also have the following junior teams:

Stadium and spectators

The Hanau Hornets play their home games in the 16,000-seat Herbert-Dröse Stadium in Hanau-Kesselstadt (Wilhelmsbad Bahnhof). There are around 870 seats on the covered main grandstand, but the standing space in the opposite grandstand also offers a good view of the extensive sports complex. An average of 700 spectators attend the Hornets games , and up to 1,500 spectators at the top games. This makes the hornets the crowd puller in Hanau sports.

Many finals have already taken place here. The German Bowl was hosted in Hanau in 1994, and the Ladies Bowl took place at the same location a year later . For 1999 and 2000 the Junior Bowl came to Hanau. International finals have also taken place here. In 1998 the Hanau Hawks won the Federation Cup, the predecessor of the EFAF Cup, against the Graz Giants in this stadium . The German national team celebrated their biggest triumph so far: At the 2001 European Championships they won their first European championship in this stadium and in 2003 they came third in the World Cup finals.
