The 2009 season of the German Football League 2 was the 28th season of the GFL 2, the second highest division of American football in Germany.

In the North Season, the Berlin Rebels were able to secure the championship. Due to the withdrawal of the Hamburg Blue Devils from the GFL, they rose straight away. The Hamburg Eagles and the Hildesheim Invaders were relegated to the regional leagues .

The Franconian Knights won the championship title in the South Season , but they lost in the relegation against the Munich Cowboys and stayed in GFL 2. The last two, the Montabaur Fighting Farmers and the Stuttgart Silver Arrows , were relegated to the regional league.

In the south, the Kirchdorf Wildcats had not applied for a license for the GFL 2, the successors were the Stuttgart Silver Arrows , who were relegated to the GFL 2.

In the north, the athletically qualified Frankfurt (Oder) Red Cocks had not applied for a license. As successors, the athletically relegated Bonn Gamecocks and the Magdeburg Virgin Guards as successors from the Regionalliga Ost and the Paderborn Dolphins , losers in the relegation against the Hildesheim Invaders , submitted license applications for the GFL 2. On November 10, 2008 the Federal Game Committee announced that Stuttgart and Bonn remain in GFL 2, at the beginning of December all 16 teams were then granted the license.

Season course

Regular season

On April 18 and 19 the league started with three early games. In the south, the Franken Knights won against the Montabaur Fighting Farmers with 34:10. In the north, the GFL relegated Cologne Falcons won against the promoted Hildesheim with 24:22 and the Hamburg Eagles beat the Düsseldorf Panthers with 30:13.

In the southern group, the Franken Knights first settled at the top of the table, after four games of the season the Knights offense could already score 192 points. The co-favorite Wiesbaden Phantoms also won their first games, while the Darmstadt Diamonds, relegated from the GFL , were defeated by 15:17 in Montabaur. The newcomers from Kaiserslautern and Mannheim first had to pay tribute to the new league and just lost their opening games.

In the northern group, the GFL relegated Cologne Falcons had the best start with three wins from three games. In the fourth game, however, they had to clearly defeat the Düsseldorf Panthers with 28:48 in their own stadium and hand over the championship lead to the Langenfeld Longhorns, who also won their first three games.

Relegation for promotion to the GFL

Due to the withdrawal of the Hamburg Blue Devils from the GFL Nord, the Berlin Rebels were promoted directly to the GFL without relegation.

In the south there was a duel between the Munich Cowboys and the Franken Knights . At the game in Munich , the guests from Rothenburg initially determined the action and led to the break with 21: 7. In the second half of the game, the Cowboys got better into the game and were able to come up to 21:24 after three quarters. The home team then put the last points on the scoreboard again. 37 seconds before the end of the game, the Cowboys quarterback managed a 1-yard touchdown run and the home team took the lead for the first time in the game. After a successful attempt at extra points the score was 28:24, which was also the final score.

Relegation to promotion to the GFL 2

Due to the withdrawal of the Hamburg Blue Devils from the GFL Nord, the relegation regulation of the GFL 2 Nord was modified. From the three regional leagues North, East and West, two climbers were identified in the GFL 2 North. In addition, the penultimate of the GFL 2 North could decide for himself whether he wanted to stay in the league. If he does not want this, the bottom of the table is requested. If he does not want to remain in the league either, a decision will be made on any successors.
